Activities Of Satan In The World Religions
“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man,
but the end thereof is the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25)
RELIGIOUSNESS IS AN INVENTION OF SATAN
Did this statement shock you, my dear reader? Let me add to it that Satan never was as successful with mankind as he was in the field of religion. Perhaps the reason for that is people never expected Satan to have any influence in the area of religion. It is a forbidden area for him, as people may think. Perhaps that is exactly what gave him the opportunity in the sphere where he is being continuously cursed, amid people’s chanting: “God.”
According to the Bible, the first evil murderer was Cain, and he was also the first religious. After Cain, there followed an innumerable sum of people who ensued in the path of being religious, the path of Cain (Jude 11). Reading the ancient history, we find more than half of what was recorded in it expresses religious practices. Over the course of history, the first reason for wars and bloodshed was religion(31)!! No wonder then, that when Plato, the Greek philosopher, said that man is only an animal with two feet, his contemporaries objected to his expression, and one of them said that man is a religious animal!(32)
Man is always inclined to be religious, and Satan knows that very well. So, Satan exploited this instinct of mankind and diverted it from its proper path to push people away from worshipping the real God, on one hand, and to try to make their worship and kneeling given only to him, on the other hand. This was always an ancient ambition of Satan.
Therefore, man’s thought get-together with Satan’s. Man is no longer comfortable in the presence of God, because of his sins (Gen 3:8-10). But he cannot be comfortable away from God either, because God breathed into him the breath of life (Gen. 2:7). How do we deal with this dilemma? Without religion, there is no comfort, and, near God, while being as sinful as he is, there is no comfort. Is there a remedy?
Satan approached mankind with a remedy in a type of religion that suits him; practices that satisfy the religious instinct, but do not condemn his conscience for sinning. It indeed opens several inlets to his instincts with formal worship in the form of rituals, pleasing man and providing sedatives for his weary conscience.
CAIN AND HIS PATH
Cain was the first-born in the world. He was the first religious person. He was also the first murderer!! His family, as we have seen in chapter 7, founded the world system. Religion, on the other hand, was established by Cain himself!
Indeed, the seed of being religious was older than Cain. It started in the Garden of Eden immediately after the fall and nakedness of man, since he tried to fix himself by himself. Adam and his woman sewed fig leaves together for themselves to cover their nudity one from the other. But as soon as they heard the voice of God walking in the Garden, they hid themselves behind its trees since they felt that the way they fixed themselves does not work before God. This is one of the major symptoms of people’s religions. People’s religions demand that everyone makes covering for himself to conceal his nudity and to fix his affairs. Christianity, on the other hand, offers people the remedy of God, which is the same thing we have seen in the Garden of Eden, since God Himself made coats of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them with it.
Outside of the Garden of Eden Cain was born. Cain was not an atheist since he admitted the existence of God. Religion, to him, was not a trivial matter, since he was the first to bring fruits of the ground for offerings. Cain did not worship an imaginary God, but rather rendered his offering to the Lord. Where is the problem then? Cain’s mistake was that he tried to approach God in a way that is suited with his own thinking and not according to God’s thoughts and declarations. All in all, he pursued the path of self-will in the matters of God. That is why God rejected him.
What did God tell Cain when he submitted his offering? He said, “If thou doest well, will not [thy countenance] look up [with confidence]?” (Gen 4:7). What did God mean with his saying, “If thou doest well?" He meant for Cain to offer a sacrifice, just as Abel did, in order for The Lord to accept his oblation. When Cain refused the counsel of God and killed his own brother, what did the Scripture say about that? The Bible says, “Cain was of the wicked one, and slew his brother; and on account of what slew he him? Because his works were wicked” (I Jn 3:12). What wicked works were they? It is his non-blood offering. His wicked works, in the eye of the Scripture are the same works that he had seen as good in his own eyes!
MANKIND RELIGIONS AND THE PATH OF CAIN
The path of Cain started at the beginning of times. It was called “the path of Cain” because Cain was the first one to pursue it. But the path of Cain is present today everywhere. Although it is one way, yet the path of Cain encompasses several, innumerable roads at the same time. This is why the path is the widest of all roads, since it includes all thoughts of all kinds of people, all of their intellect, all of their sectarian beliefs that are gathered within this common factor.
Cain, with his oblation that he offered to God, as if he was saying, “Here I am. I have done all I could do. Even though the fruits I am offering are the product of the cursed earth, but the curse was not my own making, rather, it was brought on by God to penalize my father’s sin. But I am offering to God, out of my own labor, the best I have.” !!
This is exactly what the religion of man is. It rejects the principle of inheriting sin. In other words it denies that man is a sinner the moment he was born, and needs a savior to redeem him. Hence, man’s religion belittles and rejects the grace of God, which He provided as a remedy for man’s ills. It denies the necessity of sacrifice and the need for bloodshed to make atonement for the soul. (Lev. 17:11), and the Biblical prescript that, “without blood-shedding there is no remission.” (Heb. 9:22).
As we have shortly before mentioned, that the religions of man demand that man himself weaves his own robe to cover his nakedness before God, we also add that these religions deny the fact that God looks for man. It promotes the belief that man should be looking for God, whom he infuriated. Now, look at the poorest countries of the world, Vietnam or India for example, you find them there dying of starvation, yet a typical person there carries food to the river to offer it to his god! He scourges himself with a whip until his blood pours out of his body to satisfy his god!! Yes, it is true that man, in all of the human kind religions, searches for god and tries to satisfy his deity any way he possibly can.
When you find a man searching for god, this is a religion. Christianity, on the other side of the coin, teaches that God searches for man. He approaches man and comes to man’s world. And, in Christ, He came “reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their offences; and putting in us the word of that reconciliation.” (II Co. 5:19). Now, can you see the deep and basic difference between the path of Cain and Christianity?
CAIN’S PATH IN CHRISTIANITY
Christianity itself was not safe from the path of Cain. That is what we see in the epistle of Jude, the epistle that deals with apostasy from the faith that was given once to the saints (Jude 3). Christianity was burdened from the beginning with people who deviated from its simplicity and its purity, and followed the path of Cain. Notice that they did not invent that path, since it is as ancient as mankind. But Satan imposed, on Christianity, people whom he affected to make them take the Christian faith and follow the path of Cain with it. Jude says about them, “Woe to them, because they have gone in the way of Cain,” (Jude 11), and they will continue being burden on Christianity until the very end, while displaying the same pattern. The first step in the way of deflection from the straight path gives a signal to what the end of the road is! How fearful that end of the swerved road!
Cain, along with his brother Abel, stand at the forefront of human history as precursors to tell us about two very different pathways. Before God, you will not find any more than two groups. In Christianity, as well, you will always find the same two groups.
Cain, the older, and the one who is mentioned first (Gen 4), represents the larger division and the more numerous and outstanding sect of Christendom. They are those who glorify God only with their lips. They think that uttering the name of the Lord and articulating sweet words before Him, regardless of the condition of their own hearts and the corruption of their nature is sufficient to guarantee them a place in the Kingdom of God. They stand before God, pretending worshiping, and live the rest of their time for themselves, forgetting the rights of God. They also refuse to face the requirements of His justice, based upon the sacrifice. But Abel, the younger son, who is hated from Cain, represents the little flock (Lk 12:32). They are those who felt the agonies of their sin, chose to abide by the word of God and surrender to His will, took refuge in the sacrifice of Christ, and thereby were accepted at the door of God.
This is the major difference between the religion of Cain and the faith of Abel. And that is the vivid contrast between true Christianity, which is a remedy from God to all people on one hand, and the religions of the world on the other. In the human religions man tries to offer the best he has to satisfy God, while in Christianity God Has already offered the best He has, His Only Begotten Son, to redeem mankind and convert them to Him. In man’s religion, the poor person diligently tries to do something, but in Christianity he only has to believe in The One, who completed the work!
How successful was Satan, through man’s religiousness in all its forms and shapes, to make the Gospel of the Grace of God “veiled in those that are lost” (II Cor. 4:3). Indeed, it is through religiousness and what it entails in rituals and ordinances that sedate the weary conscience, dead beliefs that make the mind petrified and solid, the Gospel of God was veiled. The outwardly and artificial righteousness only satisfies the flesh and human nature of man. Indeed, how hard Satan tried and is trying to separate millions from the simple message of the Gospel of God. “In whom the god of this world (Satan) has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, so that the radiancy of the glad tidings of the glory of the Christ, who is [the] image of God, should not shine forth [for them].” (II Co. 4:4).
THE PATH OF CAIN IN MODERN HERESIES
We can also say that those to whom Jude is referring to with the statement: “Woe to them, because they have gone in the way of Cain,” are those who invent the new heresies in Christianity that denied the atonement of The Lord and fantasized the teaching implying the approach to God without the blood of Christ and not founded on His sacrifice.
Someone(33) said that, “The Devil will leave us all the religion, all the so-called Christianity that we want, if he can eliminate from it all that can be an answer to his accusation” i.e. the concept of ‘atonement through the Blood’.” The Devil’s happiness results from the fact that he knows for certain that his eternal defeat has been completed in the Cross.
No wonder then that The Lord answers Peter, “Get away behind me, Satan” (Mt. 16:21-23), when Peter tried to make Him abandon the cross and eliminate that entire idea from the plan of God. This means that the Devil labors to have “the work of the cross” be ignored and left-out from the subject of approaching God .
The Bible is candid and decisive in the concept of “No Christianity without the cross,” since there is no coming near God except on the basis of The Blood of Christ. What would the cunning serpent do then? What would the crafty followers of Satan do? The Holy Bible gives the answer: “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.” (II Co. 11: 14,15). They say that this teaching contradicts justice when it meant to assure it. Is it fair that The Righteous suffers for the sins of the guilty? Indeed this would have been a logical and accepted posture if The Righteous was forced to endure the penalty in place of the guilty. But if The Righteous has accepted it willingly, then his sustaining the sentence does not contradict righteousness and harmonizes with love.
NOW, HOW ABOUT THOSE TO WHOM THE GOSPEL WAS NOT PREACHED?
By this question I end my meditations on this chapter. It is a question that nags on the minds of many. If the teaching of The Cross is so much fundamental and essential in the relationship of the souls with God, what is the guilt of those to whom the simple and clear declaration of God, comprising the Holy Bible, was not preached? What is the misdeed of those millions, in all four corners of the world, all the way to the limits of outreach of the inhabited world, who still worship idols?
The apostle Paul answers this question in the epistle to the Romans, the same epistle that illustrates the way of salvation. Before the apostle explains, in chapter 3, God’s way to redeem the sinful man, he had cited, twice, in chapters 1 and 2, that man is “without an excuse.” He states that, “from [the] world’s creation the invisible things of him are perceived, being apprehended by the mind through the things that are made, both his eternal power and divinity, —so as to render them inexcusable.” (Ro 1:20), and, the conscience from inside clarifies to man the requirements of God’s holiness and righteousness. “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man,” [Review Ro. 1:32; 2:1,14,15]. The problem does not originate from the ability of the Devil, even though he is quite capable, but in spite of his wickedness and his ability to mislead the millions, he has absolutely no power to mislead a person who is diligently searching for God and want to know the truth. He can only blind those who, willingly, reject the enlightenment. In spite of all the bewilderment placed by Satan before the souls, The Holy Spirit is present in the world to reprove and convince it (Jn 16:8). And, now, darkness is past and the true light now shines (I Jn 2:8).
Watchman Nee(34), the well-known Servant of the Lord from China, told this incident about a young boy from a pagan family living in China. The mother of the boy took him, when he was 12, to a temple in the mountains. While the boy was kneeling before an idol with his mother, he thought, “How can I worship this ugly idol? Can an idol bring salvation? If not, why am I worshipping it then?” Out of respect for his mother, the boy continued his rituals till the end. When his mother returned to her cart wanting to go back home, the boy went to a secluded spot in the temple where there was an opening in the ceiling displaying the bright skies. He looked through the opening, focusing his eyes as far away into the blue as it can travel, and said, “Oh God, even though I do not know You yet, I believe that it is not possible for You to dwell in this small and despised temple. You are too great to be living here, You must be dwelling there above, in the vast skies…. Oh God, I do not know yet how to reach You, and my sins bind me, and the world is pulling me away from You. But I surrender my soul into Your hands wherever You reside.”
Thirty years passed before Watchman Nee met that person and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to him. The man told Mr. Nee, “I have met, today for the first time, The Lord and God Jesus Christ. But this is the second time I am touched by God, since a strange thing happened and shook my whole being thirty years ago over by the mountain.”!
And now, did this book lies in the hands of someone who is not convinced with the mere ritualistic practices “unable to perfect as to conscience him that worshipped… [consisting] only of meats and drinks and divers washings, ordinances of flesh.” (Heb 9:9,10)? Why don’t you imitate the Chinese young boy? Ask God, from the bottom of your heart, to declare Himself to you, just as the apostle Paul advised the wise men of Athens, “that they may seek God; if indeed they might feel after him and find him, although he is not far from each one of us:” (Ac 17:27). Then “God perhaps may sometime give them repentance to acknowledgment of [the] truth, that they may awake up out of the snare of the devil, [who are] taken by him, for his will.” (II Tim 2:25,26).
I believe that eternity will uncover for us a large number of incidents that have taken place, similar to the incident of the Chinese boy, in different forms and shapes. Any person, from whichever race and in wherever place, sincerely prays a prayer not like the prayer of the young boy, must become subject to a declaration of God about Himself. God says, “and ye shall seek me and find me, for ye shall search for me with all your heart” (Jer. 29:13).
Adam and Eve’s remedy for their situation was to make aprons from fig leaves. Later on, when The Lord Jesus Christ came and saw a fig tree at a distance, came and looked to see if anything can be found in it, He found only leaves, so He condemned it (Mt 21:19). From this we understand that whatever is used by the sinner to cover his nudity away from the sight of God is nothing but “Anathema” (Gal 1:6-9), i.e. condemned and cursed in the sight of God.
In Genesis 15, when God made the covenant with Abram, we find five different sacrifices were offered that day. We read, “And the birds of prey came down on the carcasses; and Abram scared them away.” (Gen 15:11). This is an image depicting the attempts of the spiritual hosts of evil (birds of prey) to defy the teaching of the sacrifice of Christ, and the importance of his atoning death. But the faith, represented by Abram (see v. 6) scared them away, i.e.: nullifies these attempts.
Satan and Paganism
“What then do I say? that what is sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? But that what [the nations] sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not to God.” (I Co. 10:19,20)
INAUGURATION OF PAGANISM
We have seen in the previous chapter that the founder of religion is Cain,
Adam’s firstborn. Paganism, quite likely, was not known in the “Old World," the world before the Flood. The first building erected in the “Present World," the world after the Flood, was Noah’s altar on which Noah offered his burnt-offerings to God (Gen 8). Regrettably, a quick diversion of people away from God had taken place afterwards. They set themselves apart from God. The ninth chapter of Genesis starts with a blessing and ends with a curse. In chapter 10 we find a hint of rebellion against God (verse 9), then in chapter 11, we find the story of the inauguration of paganism and laying its foundation in the world after only a few decades of the Flood .
That means that people did not start with multiple deities to end-up with unification, as is being promoted by the inventors of the “Theory of Metamorphism” in the spiritual field , but on the contrary, when they knew God, as the apostle Paul says in Romans 1:21,28, they “fell into folly in their thoughts, and their heart without understanding was darkened:… And …they did not think good to have God in [their] knowledge,” because of God’s holiness. They first refused the knowledge of the true God, then Satan exploited the opportunity and offered them an alternative. He offered them paganism.
Nemrod , the son of Cush, the son of Ham, is the founder of paganism. This Nemrod, as we understand from reading the ancient history(35), was a mighty person. He trained his followers to hunt, and he formed an army from them. He entered into wars with that army, to establish the first kingdom in the world. People at that time were not used to wars, so that it was possible for him to subdue the entire land between Asshur and Lybia. Of that power, the Bible points to Nemrod as, “he began to be mighty on the earth.” (Gen 10:8).
In addition to the mighty power, Justin(36), the historian says, “Nemrod was the first to invent black magic to influence his friends and foes equally.” But Shem, the faithful Noah’s son, wanted to get rid of these demonic practices immediately. He punished the practitioners so others would find a lesson which they must not forget. As a result, the demonic practices dwindled down and performing it were limited to secret practises. This was the origin of the religious secrets in all ancient pagan worshipping, as well as the modern occults. Of this rebellion against God the first allegory in the Bible emanated, “He was a mighty hunter before Jehovah; therefore it is said, As Nimrod, the mighty hunter before Jehovah!” (Gen 10:9).
As Nemrod possessed both human strength and Satanic powers, he founded a corrupt system that is distinguished with enmity to God. That system is Babel, since the Scripture says, “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel” (Gen. 10:10). In that system, Nemrod was able to unify all mankind to execute a horrible Satanic plan, plotting openly against God . It is not far-fetched to imagine that Satan himself had promised Nemrod to make him king of over the whole world as soon as his universal rebellion was to succeed with dethroning God.
The 11th chapter of Genesis tells us the story of that universal rebellion. In the plain of the land of Shinar (In Iraq), the place known for its clear skies and beautiful weather, as people lifted their eyes upwardly, they saw the celestial bodies and shiny stars. (Job 31:26); “They fell into folly in their thoughts, and their heart without understanding was darkened: … who changed the truth of God into falsehood, and honoured and served the creature more than him who had created [it], who is blessed for ever. Amen.” (Ro 1:21, 25).
“And they said, Come on, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which [may reach] to the heavens.“ (Gen 11:4). Naturally it was not God’s heavens they aimed to reach, since the wise of Babel were not so gullible to conceive the possibility of reaching the heavens with a tower. Moreover, they, “did not think good to have God in [their] knowledge”, and they say to God “Depart from us, for we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways” (Ro. 1:28 & Job 21:14). Why then were they trying to reach Him?
It is conceivable to surmise that their aim behind building the tower was not to reach God, but rather to trade God for another piety. The first things attracted them were the sun, the moon, the stars and the planets.
Out of the rest of the story of Genesis 11 we can understand how God squandered this attempt by man when He “confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth.” (Gen 11:7) The name of the city was then called “Babel," and since that time Babel was considered the symbol of paganism and its clear fingerprints: Magic, astronomy, and secret religious rituals.
THE SPREADING OF PAGANISM AND ITS HEINOUSNESS
When the children of man were scattered over the face of the earth out of Babel, the seed of paganism was implanted in their hearts. They carried that seed everywhere, to all regions they scattered to, and there, the seed was grown and eventually fully blown.
That is why we find that the sun was worshipped in all nations of the world, and it was called different names in different spots of the earth, e.g., in ancient Egypt we find many obelisks erected to glorify the sun . Those obelisks are called “the Asherahs” and “the sun-images.” (Isa 17:8; 27:9;…. Etc.)
With the worship of celestial bodies we also find worship of fellow man, starting with worshipping Nemrod. It is so regretful that while God made man “on His own image,” the defected man started to make his god on man’s image!! Studying Mythology, the science of ancient legend, we find in the history of every nation, a mighty man, one or more, which was considered god. The stories of those gods in every population resemble each other to a great extent, which leads us to believe that it was all originated from the same cradle, started before the scattering of people. It is all in conformity with the abbreviated signal given in Scripture about Nemrod(38). And about this matter, i.e., worshipping man, the Bible says, “And they joined themselves unto Baal-Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.” (Ps. 106:28).
Paganism, in fact, declined to even lower levels. Its morals, if any, continued to decay as we see from the verbiage of the apostle Paul: “They changed the glory of the incorruptible God into [the] likeness of an image of corruptible man and of birds and quadrupeds and reptiles” (Rom. 1:21-23). Is it not regrettable that man causes the decadence of his god to such menial levels? It was not even enough for man to worship man, and paint the picture of his god as a fellow man, but took it even down to the abject level of reptiles!, namely, the same image of Satan!!! And, if man worshipped reptiles, this means that man is of an inferior class to reptiles. It is not possible that a person somehow elevates above his god, the one he worships. If man can step over, or crush the head of, his god, then, to what extent did man himself had deteriorated?!!
ANCIENT AND MODERN PAGANISM
The Bible speaks to us about many of the pagan gods worshipped by man. In Egypt, the worship of the ox named “Abyss” was imitated by the people of God in the wilderness (Ex. 32:4; Ps. 106:20; Deut. 9:16), and again after their entry to the promised land and their building of the temple (I Ki 12:28). The history adds that Egypt, the nation that was known for its wisdom (Isa. 19:1-14), worshipped the owl, the crocodile, the beetle (known as Holy Coleopteran)! Etc.…
In Palestine, they worshipped Dagon (Jdg 16:23; I Sam. 5:2), the creature with half-fish-body. In Ekron, a Palestinian city, they worshipped Baal Zabob, or the god of flies. Even in the days of the prophet Elijah, the king of Israel sought that god and was punished by death for challenging and ridiculing of God. This voyage through the different pagan gods continues until we reach the New Testament and find Athens, the city of wisdom, full of idols (Ac 17:16) so that Paul, when he visited the city, was provoked (Ac 17:16) because of the abundance of its false gods. It was said that it was easier to meet an idol in Athens than meeting a man(39)!!!.
Paganism is widespread, even today, in many nations of the world , not only among the different barbaric tribes in Africa and Asia, but also in some of the most modernized and advanced nations such as Japan. Other countries where paganism is apparently declined, are found to have Satan only changed the outer shell of paganism, or maybe changed its expiration date only, but he is still selling the same old goods he has in his warehouse. The sun and the moon were worshipped in the old days. The sun was worshipped because it represented “power and productivity” and was called “Baal.” The moon was worshipped because it represented beauty, love and sex, and was called “Ashtaroth.” Today, where we do not find anyone who worships these gods in these names, Baal and Ashtaroth, we find those who worship power, and who worship beauty . Consider, for example, the modern, elated and progressive nations. You will find in them the life of man is divided between days spent in hard labor seeking money (the real power of the world today), and nights devoted to fun and lascivious life. This way is a vivid depiction of man worshipping idols day and night, during the day he worships Baal (the sun), and at night he worships Ashtaroth (the moon)!
THE VANITY OF PAGANISM
The earliest mentioning of paganism in the Bible came in Genesis 31:19, 30 and 32. Upon examination we can see the tremendous difference between the greatness of The Real God and the idols. Laban tells that God came to him in a nightly dream defending His slave Jacob and telling him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.” Laban continues his query saying, “But why did you steal my gods?” Indeed, what a difference that is between a True God who defends his slave, and those idols that cannot defend even their own selves!
Later, Moses came, and, with the plagues God inflicted upon the Egyptians, He did not only make judgments upon the Egyptians but also upon the Egyptian gods. (Ex. 5-12). The first plague was dealt on the river, the fifth was against the animals, the ninth was against the sun, the tenth was upon the firstborn. The water of the river was transformed into blood, the skies were cloaked in black in spite of the god “Ra,” all firstborn, including those of Pharaoh were tainted with the color of death. He, therefore, showed clearly how the gods of the Egyptians were not able to save them or even save themselves!
Posterior to these plagues, God taught the same lesson to the Philistines when they took the ark of the covenant and placed it in the house of Dagon, then Dagon fell before the ark. In the next day, Dagon fell again and his head and hands were cut-off. (I Sam. 5)!
God had mocked the idols of Babel saying, “their idols are borne by beasts of burden. The images that are carried about are burdensome, a burden for the weary.” That is to say that their idols became a great burden and heavy weight on those who carry it during their escape. But, regarding God, He says of His people: “ye who have been borne from the belly, who have been carried from the womb: Even to old age, I [am] HE, and unto hoary hairs I will carry [you]: It is I that have made, and I will bear, and I will carry, and will deliver.” (Isa 46:1-4).
How sorrowful those words of Isaiah about those who worship idols: “They have no knowledge, and understand not; for he hath plastered their eyes, that they may not see; and their hearts, that they may not understand. And none taketh it to heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire {the part of the tree he cut}, and have also baked bread upon the coals thereof, I have roasted flesh, and eaten [it], and with the rest thereof shall I make an abomination? {i.e., an idol} shall I bow down to a block of wood? He feedeth on ashes; a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, is there not a lie in my right hand?” (Isa 44:18-20).
Is there a more hideous ignorance than this? “professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Ro. 1:22), which is the same declaration of the apostle Paul in Athens, the city of wisdom, when he summarized the entire human history which deviated to paganism in this melancholy phrase, “the times of ignorance,” (Ac 17:30)
THE DOMINATION OF PAGANISM
It is a reason to wonder to see the domination of paganism upon people’s minds, in spite of its triviality and vanity. The Book of Acts, which gives us an account of the deterioration of paganism, yielding to the light of the Gospel, provides us with a model of that domination in chapter 19 when it tells the story of the chaos that took place in the city of Ephesus during the service of the apostle Paul. Ephesus was a city worshipping the goddess Artemis (or Diana) which was worshipped by the entire population of Asia. Its temple was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Ephesians believed that its statue was descended from heavens!, from the planet Zeus (Ac 19:35-36). Now, listen to what the Scripture records about the inhabitants of Ephesus when they chanted loudly for two hours, “And having heard [this], and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. And the [whole] city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with [them] Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travelers of Paul. But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not, and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre. Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together. But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defense to the people. But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians. And the town clerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the [image] which fell down from heaven?” (Ac 19: 28-35).
This shows us that paganism is a very powerful system. It ties its followers with iron claws. Someonesaid about paganism that it is not a system that was developed spontaneously, and not a product of nature or human primitive intelligence. It is a system produced by unusual forces and unnatural art, founded by cunning, deceitful, and furtive designers. The hand of Satan, and his head as well, are clearly apparent in paganism. He is the scheming and inspiring force behind it. That is what gives paganism its tremendous effect and formidable force. No wonder then, that the apostle orders us to flee from the dangerous act of worshipping idols. (I Co. 10:14).
These same fingerprints can be found in many of today’s religions. Indeed, your search for logic in many of the religious rituals today shall always go in vain. That is because there is a concealed power or subtle force working behind the scene, the force of demons supporting paganism, leading people to practice things that are devoid of any meaning. Paganism had left its fingerprints on man’s religions vividly. That is why when a person reverts away from directing his heart onto God, instead, he goes into practicing some of those rituals, you will find the most intelligent people submitting themselves to things that are fallacious in their own minds, but they practice it, nonetheless, because they cannot help being under the influence of Satan(44).
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PAGANISM AND SATAN
The apostle Paul explained the intimate relationship between the Devil and paganism, when he said: “But that what [the nations] sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God. Now I do not wish you to be in communion with demons” (I Co. 10:20). If we realize that the demons are in fact themselves the subtle force behind the worship of idols , we then easily recognize why heathendom is intimately related to cruelty and impurity.
Since ancient times paganism and filth were intimately related. The first time we read about this in Scripture, in Ex 32, when the Israelites tried, after their exodus from Egypt, to imitate their old masters, the Egyptians, who habitually made magnificent feasts in their religious ceremonies, and invite to it the elite of men and women, then they start with music and dance and singing, then they go into lewd practices(45) (similar to what takes place today in the European Carnivals ).
So, the Israelites made a golden calf, similar to what they have seen in Egypt before. In Exodus 32:6 we read, “And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered up burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to sport.” The particular sport alluded to can be found in Exodus 32:25, “And Moses saw the people how they were stripped; for Aaron had stripped them to [their] shame before their adversaries”. What sport is it to be practiced while stripped?!!
Notice that the heathen religions were always related to adultery (compare Rev. 2:14). The Israelites were said to have joined themselves to Baal-Peor and committed fornication with the daughters of Moab, “And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab. And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods. And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.” (Nu 25:1-3). Paganism was even related to what is significantly worse than fornication. In the days of the sinful kings of Judah, when the house of God was filled with idols, it was found in the house of God a home for the homosexuals (sodomites) who dedicated themselves to filth and lewdness. (II Ki 23:5-7).
If you follow the history you will see how there was always a direct relationship between the degree of immersing into idolatry and the extent to which mankind practiced filth, deceit and immorality(47). They gave-up God so God gave them up (Ro. 1:24, 26). If they rejected God because they rejected His holiness, it is no wonder that they were filled with evil and filth.
The cruelty that was always related to paganism was depicted, among other things, in burning their off-springs to satisfy the gods!! How many times did the Bible warned against sacrificing sons and daughter to Molech . (Lev. 20:1-4; Deut. 18:10; II Ki 21:6; Ps. 106:36,37; and compare to II Ki 3:27).
Today, the demonic duet savagery and squalor have gathered and joined together, in the gatherings of Satanic worship in the temples of Satan that are now widespread in the West and where human sacrifices are offered, especially from children. In those gatherings we also know that filthy erotic practices are exercised under the influence of drugs.
There is a different image of this savagery that is depicted in torturing oneself, where people in some countries walk bare-footed over burning coal to be cleansed of their sins. In other instances they subject their bodies to whipping and torture while walking on the points of nails to satisfy their gods, or, expose their bodies to extreme cold or extreme heat for getting near to their idols.
A BIBLICAL DEPICTION: ZEBAH and ZALMUNNA
In his war against the Medianites, Gideon victory reflects the victory of God, in Christ, over the forces of the Devil, (Judges 7,8). In the beginning, the princes of Median were arrested and killed “And they took two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb; and they pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.” (Jdg 7:24,25), But, behind these two princes there was two kings, Zebah and Zalmunna, whom Gideon also killed (Jdg 8:5-21).
In the two princes, we find embodying of the heathen principles. But in the two kings who are superior to them we find the subtle force working behind paganism. This force is, undoubtedly, the Devil himself. In the names of these four persons we find some spiritual teaching.
The two princes of the Medianites are Oreb and Zeeb. These names are Hebrew names. The first, Oreb, (or raven) is a black bird that feeds on rotted dead bodies. It is the bird of darkness and uncleanness. In him we find the image of corruption. The other, Zeeb (a wolf), is an animal known for its savagery and wildness. In it, we find the image of cruelty and ferocity . These are symbols of the ugly duet that we have seen in the principles of paganism. (Ro. 1:24-28; Ps. 14:1-3; and Ro. 1:29-31).
But, behind those principles there exists Satan himself fully active and represented in the two kings of Median, Zebah and Zalmunna, whose names mean consecutively “slaughter” and “forbidden shadow (i.e., complete darkness).”
Therefore, the uncleanness and savagery (namely the Oreb and Zeeb) are a horrible duet for anyone who walks in the painful road of paganism behind the Devil. This horrible duet will lead him ultimately to the same miserable fate of Satan, i.e., slaughter and forbidden shadow “bring them here and slay [them] before me.” (Lk 19:27), and, “Bind him feet and hands, and take him away, and cast him out into the outer darkness” (Mt 22:13)
Zebah and Zalmunna, and Oreb and Zeeb are true images of Satan and paganism, whether to portray attitude or fate. But God, as we get to know Him from the Bible, is the exact and completely opposite to that.
Look, O my soul, to the full declaration of God in Christ! Look at the cross. What do you find?
The answer is “God is light” (I Jn 1:5), and, “God is love” (I Jn 4:8,16).
God is light. He hates sin and vile to no extent. Even when sin was placed on His Beloved Son in Golgotha, He left Him in the midst of darkness! But the cross had also declared to what extent God loves mankind, love with no limits. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him may not perish, but have life eternal.” (Jn 3:16).
Why then, you, precious souls, do not convert from going behind the Oreb and the Zeeb, from Zebah and Zalmunna, back to God as we have known Him in Christ?!!
“Return ye, and turn from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your snare.” (Eze. 18:30)
The World of Obscurity & the Realm of Darkness
“That ye might set forth the excellencies of him who has called
you out of darkness to his wonderful light;” (I Peter 2:9)
Obscurity and darkness, the arenas where Satan has indeed exhibited all his skills and crafts. He has a long-winded history in this area, always aiming for mankind to have direct communication with him, holding his hand, reverting to him and consulting him, so they can be counted among the overtly rebellious enemies of God. “For rebellion is [as] the sin of divination,” (I Sam. 15:23). And God will turn His face away from them, “And the soul that turneth unto necromancers and unto soothsayers, to go a whoring after them, I will set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people” (Lev. 20:6, 27) and hates them, “For every one that doeth these things is an abomination to Jehovah, and because of these abominations Jehovah thy God doth dispossess them from before thee.” (Deut. 18:12).
These practices are divided into 3 major activities:
Different satanic styles aimed at obtaining knowledge.
Styles that attract the power of Satan, to inflict harm or to dodge it.
Mythical beliefs.
FIRST: STYLES TO OBTAIN KNOWLEDGE
The purpose of those is to gather information about the past, the present, and, particularly and most significantly, the future. The person, whose heart is devoid of peace, worrying about his future, usually reverts to these styles to obtain knowledge. Of such styles we find communication with the spirits, tarot and other fortune telling methods such as asking the stars, consulting with the dead, and many other methods. The knowledge he is after, is obtained through mediators between man and the demons. This explains its intimate relationship with heathendom . The Bible says, “and they shall seek unto the idols and unto the conjurers [magicians and fortuneteller], and unto the necromancers, and unto the soothsayers.” (Isa. 19:3)
Satan exploited the poor man’s keenness, to be foretold of his future, which God in His wisdom aims to make it hidden to man’s eyes, so He can divert him from “things which eye has not seen, and ear not heard, and which have not come into man’s heart, which God has prepared for them that love him, but God has revealed to us by [his ] Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.” (I Co. 2:9). This keenness is not strange coming from man, who had labored from the very beginning to eat the fruits of the “knowledge tree”, so he had fallen and died. But the “tree of life” was never the subject of his interest!!
Kings of old often consulted with soothsayers regarding decisions they were about to take (See Eze. 21:21). Moreover, they supplemented their staff with diviners, astrologers, magicians and fortunetellers. (See Dan 2). This practice is being done even today. Many newspapers(49) reported that President Ronald Reagan appointed, immediately after his inauguration, a counsel for fortune-telling. The same news was reported about Adolph Hitler . What a tragedy that is for heads of states, and for their countries, to consult the Devil to care for their affairs.
We do not deny that sometimes the predictions of fortunetellers and astrologers may come true. We do not, however, ascribe this logically that demons are privileged with knowledge about the future, because it is vividly evident from the Word of God that no one knows everything (Omniscient) or know the future, except God . (See Dan. 2:27, 28 and Isa. 41:23). On the other hand when we consider that these demons (evil spirits) have a high capacity of memory, coupled with freedom of motion with extreme speed, they might be armed with vast knowledge about past and present, they can, at times, make reasonable deductions about the future, exactly like the power and style possessed by intelligence systems within an army to predict the next move of opposing battalions or even opposing political systems. Notice that the demons belong to a kingdom that is rigorously organized, a kingdom that is run by the Devil who has domination over the matters of the earth only limited by the boundaries set forth by God. Their telling of future events may very well be similar to the predictions of some scientific centers about the path of high winds, or expecting rain, and the like.
SOME OF THE STYLES FOR OBTAINING KNOWLEDGE ARE:
- DIVINATION: This descriptive word is used to illustrate all styles of obtaining knowledge through demonic ways, using different known articles of divination. The Scripture mentions some of them as follows:
i. Shaking of darts: This is similar to the well-known tossing of coins or lot. A different name would be written on different darts, then all darts were to be placed in their bag that is to be shaken. One of the darts is pulled, and the name it shows would be the name which the gods have chosen. (See Eze. 21:21).
ii. Consulting the teraphim (Eze. 21:21), i.e., the small household idols. Similarly, consulting with wood! (Hos. 4:12).
iii. Inspecting bodily organs such as liver (Eze. 21:21) When a sacrificial animal is slaughtered (often lamb), the interior organs such as the liver, were inspected. The different lines and formation of the liver would give an indication of what to do(51)!
It is possible to add, under this same subject, other styles such as the reading of the coffee lines inside the cup after it is shaken and turned upside down, the reading of the lines in the palm, using seashells to throw over sand and interpreting the way they are randomly organized, as well as the tarot.
ASTRONOMY: This style is one of the methods to predict the future, as related to the worship of stars, as we have mentioned before. People of ancient times believed that planets and celestial bodies have relationship with life on earth and the events that take place on it. This is why the astrologers draw maps showing the position of zodiac. The relative location of the celestial bodies, on the day a certain person is born, dictates his character and his future!
The failure of the astronomers and their ignorance, are quite apparent, however, from actual incidents on one hand and from the Holy Bible on the other. God, in the prophecy of Isaiah, makes mockery of the most famous astronomers of the history of mankind, the astronomers of Babel, saying, “Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath seduced thee…. But evil shall come upon thee—thou shalt not know from whence it riseth; and mischief shall fall upon thee, which thou shalt not be able to ward off; and desolation that thou suspectest not shall come upon thee suddenly. Stand now with thine enchantments and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to turn them to profit, if so be thou mayest cause terror. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the interpreters of the heavens, the observers of the stars, who predict according to the new moons what shall come upon thee, stand up, and save thee” (Isa 47:10-13).
Regrettably, the habit of consulting the stars had a strong comeback, and the column of “Your Horoscope”, or “You And The Stars” is now the only standard article in all magazines and newspapers all over the world , in all languages.
SPIRITUAL MEDIATORS: This is another way of seeking knowledge by using a “mediator” who is submitted to the dominion of the spirit of divination. These mediators are called “followers” or “friends of the jinni” or have a spirit of Python (See Lev. 19:31& 20:6,7; Deut. 18:11; I Sam. 28:3,7,9). Noteworthy is the fact that most of those mediators are women, such as the slave mentioned in the Book of Acts 16:16-18.
- In close relationship with this style is the following fourth one:
CONSULTING THE DEAD (RECALLING OF SPIRITS): This is a method of seeking knowledge through recalling “the spirits of the dead” and have a dialogue with them, as they claim. If we add to the natural desire of people to know about their future, their normal longing to communicate with their loved ones who died, we can understand why the Devil is so successful in this particular style which is completely despised by God. The spirits that attend to these meetings are the evil spirits, or the demons, since the spirits of the un-righteous dead are now jailed in Hades in the place of torture. These spirits are not allowed to lighten the torture they are exposed to by a mere iota (See Luke 16:24), therefore, it is not conceivable that these spirits would be allowed to flee their jail, even for short moments, to attend those meetings. The spirits of the faithful, on the other hand, are now with Christ in Paradise, the place of comfort and consolation. It is natural to expect that the mediators are not permitted to disquiet those spirits and bring them again to the world of misery . Hence, the spirits that attend these meetings are the evil spirits only, or the demons.
These demons have the ability to imitate voices. Just as the Devil tricked Eve, in the old, by speaking to her through the serpent, (Gen 3) demons speak through the mediators in much the same manner.
At times, these mediators “or followers” speak in voice close to whispering to sound like “voices of the dead”! This is to make-believe, in the minds of their victims, that they indeed are communicating with their dead. But, listen to God’s fearful judgment, “And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto the necromancers and unto the soothsayers, who chirp and who mutter, [say,] Shall not a people seek unto their God? [Will they go] for the living unto the dead? To the law and the testimony! If they speak not according to this word, for them there is no daybreak.” (Isa. 8:19, 20).
God’s abhorrence to this sin is evident in the incident of Saul, the king of Israel, going to a woman who befriends the jinni to recall for him the spirit of Samuel. Saul had crowned his sins with this ugly misdeed, which made God judge him quickly, since he died the very next day. (See I Sam. 28). The Bible says, “And Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah which he kept not, and also for having inquired of the spirit of Python, asking counsel of it; and he asked not counsel of Jehovah; therefore he slew him, and transferred the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.” (I Ch. 10:13, 14).
An important question now imposes itself on this situation: Did not the woman that has a spirit of Python indeed recall the spirit of Samuel? How did this happen? What is it to understand from it? Could this matter be repeated?
Yes, indeed the spirit that attended to that particular incident was the spirit of Samuel (See I Sam. 28:12, 14, 15, ..) but that was an exception to the rule. This is ascertained by the woman with the spirit of Python screamed when she saw the spirit of Samuel, even though the disguised stranger had asked her to recall the spirit of Samuel. When she started to communicate with the jinni, she was stunned to find that it was the spirit of Samuel that appeared before her and not the evil spirit of the jinni which she was used to see every time. She then realized that the camouflaged stranger is nobody but King Saul himself. (I Sam. 28:12).
As for why the Lord released the spirit of Samuel and send it to Saul, it is apparent that God meant to inflict judgment on Saul while he physically involved in his crime, as the Lord’s saying, “For every one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, who separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet to inquire of me by him, I Jehovah will answer him by myself; and I will set my face against that man, and will make him desolate, [so that he shall be] for a sign and for proverbs, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people: and ye shall know that I [am] Jehovah.” (Eze. 14:7,8) And that is exactly what happened with King Saul! Samuel was but a conduit to transmit this divine and horrible judgment upon the evil king .
As for Samuel’s saying to Saul, “and to-morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me;” (I Sam. 28:19) it simply means that they will die, their bodies will go to their graves and their souls will land in Hades .
SECOND: PROVOKING THE POWER OF SATAN OR PREVENTING HIS HARM.
If fortune telling is associated with Satan’s knowledge, then there is something else related to with his power which is:
MAGIC:
The Bible confirms the existence of magic. When Moses made his wonders before Pharaoh, “Pharaoh also called the sages and the sorcerers; and they too, the scribes of Egypt, did so with their enchantments:”. They cast their staves and became serpents, they also turned water into blood and brought up the frogs. (See Ex. 7 and 8). Jannes and Jambres, the chief magicians of Pharaoh (II Tim. 3:8) are the ones who resisted Moses. They resisted Moses by imitating his miracles aiming at belittling its effect upon the king.
Magic is the opposite of prayer. Praying is the act of communicating with God to resort to His might, while magic is communicating with Satan to import his demonic powers.
In the Book of Acts we read about magic and magicians in three places. We read about Simon The Magician in Samaria in chapter 8, Bar-jesus in Cyprus in chapter 13, and about many whom used magic in Ephesus in chapter 19. But even those were instruments for glorifying the Lord, because wherever the Word of God was present, magic evanesced. “And many of those that practiced curious arts brought their books [of charms] and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. Thus {i.e. with this effective and marvelous way} with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed.” (Ac 19:19, 20).
The magician must first sell himself utterly to Satan, so that Satan would supply him with the extraordinary power. That is why Peter accurately recognized the real Simon, the magician mentioned in Acts 8, in spite of his fame, since all the people at Samaria gave heed to him, “For I see thee to be in the gall of bitterness, and bond of unrighteousness” said Peter (Ac 8:23). What else can be said about a person who had traded his soul into the demons and is waiting for the same fate as the evil spirits?!
Frequently, the life of magicians ended in tragedies. The fate of the Russian Raspotine, one of the most famous magicians in modern history, near the end of Caesar's rule! would give a vivid example of this fact.
In the Epistles, we read several times about magic. In Galatians 5:20 it comes immediately after the account of idol worshipping. In Revelations 21:8 the magicians are included among those whose fates is into the lake that is burning with fire and brimstone. Magicians in this passage are mentioned immediately before the worshippers of false gods!
The worst kind of magic, or sorcery, is that hidden behind religion and related to it. It was said about Babel, the image of Christianity left on earth after the rapture of the church to Heavens, “for by thy sorcery have all the nations been deceived.” (Rev. 18:23).
People are used to divide magic into two types, white and black. White magic is depicted in a mighty power, extraordinary symptoms and wondrous acts, not associated with apparent harm. It may even be shown in healing wounds or treating ailments. White magic is shown in many types, ways and numerous sects. Often it actually treated illnesses and the like, but the price paid for it is prohibitive: temporary healing and permanent misery!! The writer of this book reports that he had heard of many instances assuring that Satan can indeed heal wounds but afterwards he afflicts misery(54), so the reader should beware!
Black magic, on the other hand, is associated with harm afflicted on others. In it, the sorcerer asks for a wisp of hair taken from the person targeted for harm, or perhaps a clipped nail or a part of his clothes.. By using wizardry rituals, the victim is to be subjected to tremendous torture, or afflicted with dangerous disease. At times, the harm is to be afflicted on the victim’s home, his possessions, his crops, or even his flock. At other times, the victim is to be subject to disasters or sorrowful tragedies. But the whitest of the white magic, in God’s eyes, is back and is despised. That is why the advice of God to His people is, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” (Ex. 22:18).
Regrettably, magic, sorcery, wizardry and divination are coming back into zones where it was previously freed. One of God’s servants in America mentioned this sad fact: One million pieces of “magic tables” were sold recently in the USA in a very short time. Moreover, the majority of the European and American youth have practiced magic, especially in the universities and institutions of high education .
Now, let us ascertain these important facts:
- Magic does not nullify magic. The Devil cannot revert the situation to the way it was before he inflicts damage or destroys something. In Moses days, the sorcerers could make the water turn into blood, but failed to return the blood back into water. They were able to bring up the frogs and have it invade the homes, but were unable to dismiss them back out. But Moses was able to do that with the power of praying (Ex. 7:22; 8:7,12).
- Magic has a limited power, simply because Satan himself has a limited power, he is not omnipotent. It is not one of Satan’s abilities to create things. That is why when Moses turned the dust in Egypt to mosquitoes, the scribes admitted, “This is the finger of God!” (Ex. 8:19). When Aaron cast down his staff and turned into a serpent, and Egypt’s sages, sorcerers and scribes did the same using their enchantment, Aaron’s staff swallowed theirs! (Ex. 7:10-12).
- Magicians may offer some services to people, but the paid price is very painful. Therefore, the believer must refuse to obtain anything from Satan, even if it was healing his physical wound. The faithful must decline to obtain any information from Satan. The faithful must refuse to deal with that kingdom entirely.
- The true believer cannot be harmed by any sorcery or magic. Neither the magicians nor the evil spirit behind them, neither their lofty chief the Devil can bring any harm to the faithful, “he that has been begotten of God keeps himself, and the wicked [one] does not touch him.“ (I Jn 5:18). For example, Balaam, the sorcerer, could not inflict harm on God’s people, not because sorcerers are devoid of power to harm, but because the Bible says that their power does not impose on the people of God, “For there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.” (Nu. 23:23).
THIRD: MYTHICAL BELIEFS
ENCHANTMENT AND AUGURIES (Lev. 19:26)
We divide our discussion here into four points:
- Things done to attract good fortune or to evade bad luck (jinx) such as amulets, charms, phylacteries and talismans. People wear amulets and phylacteries, or make charms and talismans to attach to their bodies, or hang charms on their necks or at their walls, thinking that these things protect them from harm or attract to them good luck.
Amulets are articles such as beads to be placed somehow by the parents on their children to protect them from envy and evil spirits.
Charms are objects made by the sorcerer and worn by the person, with the purpose of protecting him or her from suffering or afflictions.
Talismans are magic writings or drawings, not only to protect the person from harm, but also to attract good fortunes or happiness into the realm of the person’s life. An example of this is the magic lantern of Aladdin in the famous play “Thousand nights.”
We find these myths around us from every direction. The Europeans, for instance, place objects on their doors to attract good luck, such as inverted horseshoes. In Egypt many people place a turquoise bead on their children, or even on their camels or donkeys, because in the public opinion, the turquoise color protects from envious eyes! We see a lot of people hanging in their cars a horn of red pepper, a rosary, icons, a small statue of a palm with five fingers, an eggshell that is hollow and colored, all to protect their automobile from accidents. There are those who always carry a Bible in their pockets or purses, no to read in it but only to combat danger! There are others who hang the pictures of Saints or intercessors to save them from evil spirits or to place misfortunes at bay!
What is said about automobiles applies also to other things. Many people place a Bible under their pillow to prevent bad dreams.
- Considering certain people or certain things as good or bad omens. Some people have strong beliefs towards particular persons, so that when they see them they feel the joy of optimism, or, on the other hand with others, distressed with pessimism and expect disasters. This also relates to the belief that certain people have the ability to afflict harm just by looking at you (it is what the public calls the infliction of envious eyes). Whatever said about people can also be said about other creatures. There are people who take it as a horrible omen if a black cat crossed their paths (many people think that evil spirits dwell in black cats). Many others become distressed if they start their day by seeing a crow or an owl, while others cheer by seeing the same things.
Actually, many people change their regular path to work, for instance, and take a longer one, just to avoid having his eyes fall onto a scene he dislikes or considers a bad omen!
- Optimism and pessimism related to certain numbers: Many people do not use the number 13 , because the number 13 in tarot is a symbol for death. There are those who think that there is a jinxed hour in a certain day of the week (Friday noon for instance). In Egypt there are certain days of the year where childless women go to a certain mountain in Upper Egypt, and scroll their bodies down the mountain so they can bear children !! These practices, of course, are but manifestation of heathendom and ignorance.
- Awkward practices and despicable habits: Such as raising of incense to repel the evil spirits, or the mystical habit of releasing the soul of the dead in the third day after his death, or smashing some empty bottles, at year’s end, symbolizing destroying the evil powers they fear, or the same smashing of bottles to inaugurate a new ship or a new car. There is also the habit of spreading salt all over the house in the seventh day of the birth of an infant to purify the house of the spirit of envy. Moreover, there are those who name their male offspring female names or funny ones to protect them from envy and to preserve them from death!!
This was a quick sample of mystical beliefs. It is only a sample, but it is adequately enough to depict for us the darkness of paganism and the horror and ignorance of the same myths that still extend roots in the mind of the awkward human being and his silly thinking. Is it proper for the believer to share in such cheap and mindless myth? Should the believer fear the eye of the envious? Would a faithful require the help of amulets to protect him? Does a true believer really think that his fate lies in the hands of the evil powers of demons, to manipulate him as they please? Absolutely not! Even the animals of Job were within such protection by God, that Satan himself could not penetrate without God’s permission (Job 1:10). Even the hairs on our head are all counted one by one and accounted for (Mat. 10:30). That is why we see as great, the challenging cry of the apostle Paul, “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which [is] in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Ro 8:38, 39).
Our good God places His protective shield around all who trust in Him and depend on Him (Ps. 5:11, 12). How merciful God is! Every true child of Christ must not be afraid of these magnificent and mysterious phenomena that captured the minds of man and of leadership authorities of human beings(56)!
Yes, I hope and pray that every believer recognizes with absolute faith, the Biblical passage, “Now I do not wish you to be in communion with demons. Ye cannot drink [the] Lord’s cup, and [the] cup of demons: ye cannot partake of [the] Lord’s table, and of [the] table of demons. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?” (I Co. 10: 20-22); and also, “do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather also reprove [them],” (Eph 5:11).
Let us now conclude our discussion about “The World of Obscurity and The Realm of Darkness” with these seven DONT’S:
- Do Not Go: It is not allowed, for the believer, to attend the meetings held to recall spirits or anything similar to this, even if it was only for curiosity. Listen to the Scripture saying, “Turn not unto necromancers and unto soothsayers; seek not after them to make yourselves unclean” (Lev. 19:31).
- Do Not Listen: These nation, which thou shalt dispossess, hearkened unto those auguries, and that use divination; but as for thee, Jehovah thy God hath not suffered thee to do so (God does not allow you even to listen, and that applies also to reading the prediction column in the paper, not even out of curiosity). Then the Lord ads: “Jehovah thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me: {The Lord Jesus Christ}; unto him shall ye hearken” (Ac 3:22; Deut. 18:14, 15).
- Do Not Ask: “Learn not the way of the nations” (Jer. 10:2)- Also, “I will not take up their names into my lips.” (Ps. 16:4). It is dangerous for the believer to dig deeply into knowing the practices of the sinful pagans. It may entice him or trap him (See Deut. 7:25). “Brethren, be not children in [your] minds, but in malice be babes; but in [your] minds be grown [men].” (I Co. 14:20).
- Do Not Bring to Your House: “And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.” (Deut. 7:26).
- Do Not Look With Your Eyes: I will set no thing of Belial before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.” (Ps. 101:3)
- Do Not Place It On Your Body: “shall ye not make in your flesh, nor put any tattoo writing upon you: I am Jehovah.” (Lev. 19:28) because our bodies are the property of God (I Co. 6:20). Likewise we must not place on our bodies or the bodies of our children any amulets or talismans or the like.
Do Not Be Afraid Of It: Do not fear the works of the sorcerers and magicians. Do not go to them to be released of their powers, “Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of the heavens; for the nations are dismayed at them. For the statutes of the peoples are vanity {i.e. has no real value}” (Jer. 10:2, 3).
Some thinkers suggest that “Peleg”, whose name means “dividing” (Gen 11:16), and in whose days the earth was divided (I Ch 1:19), was called that name because of the dividing and scattering of people associated with the confusion of tongues in Babel. In Gen. 11 we see that the birth of Peleg took place one hundred years after the Flood! The incident of the erection of the tower of Babel then must have happened about 100 years after the Flood.
Nemrod, the son of Cush, or Bar-Cush. The name was converted to Bacchus, the Greek idol of wine.
The Tergum of Jerusalem says that Nemrod was mighty in hunting and in evil-doing equally, since he hunted people and told them to flee the government of God and pledge allegiance to Nemrod.(37).
Such as what he will do with another rebellious, the last one, i.e. the beast, the chief chieftain of the returning Roman Empire, reincarnated. (Rev 13: 2-8).
In Phoenicia (Lebanon) it was called “Adon” or “Adonise”. In Ammon (Jordan) it was called “Molok” or “Molkom”, in Moab (Jordan) it was called “Camush”, in Ashur and Babel (Iraq) it was called “Beel”, In Aram (Syria) it was called “Hadad”, and in Egypt it was called “Ra.”
There is an obelisk still existing in Cairo, Egypt, in a place ugh called Ein Shams (The Eye of the Sun). This place is most probably named like this to glorify the sun.
The ancient Egyptians called every day of the week the name of one of the planets(40). This nomenclature is still used in the European languages, as well as in India, every day of the week was named after one of the pagan gods(41). This gives a clear picture of how poganism was deeply embedded in the daily life of mankind since ancient times. Sunday, the first day of the week, is named after the sun, Monday after the moon, Tuesday was dedicated to Mars, the war-god in the Roman culture who is related to the god of the Anglo-Saxons called Tiw. Wednesday is dedicated to Mercury (Mercuridi means Wednesday in French) which is related to the Anglo-Saxon god Woden. Thursday is named after Jupiter which is related to the pagan god Thor. Friday is assigned to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty in the Roman tradition which is a reflection of the goddess Freya of the Anglo-Saxons. Saturday is named after Saturn(42). This same reference can be made to the names of many of the months.
Paganism is a state of the heart. It is possible that a person seems to be innocent and a good worshipper to God, but indeed a real pagan in his heart. The depiction of this is vivid in Eze. 8 when God persuaded Ezekiel to enter the Temple and showed him seventy of Israel’s elders who were raising incense and kneeling before idols. This was not literally, but according to the Word of God “every one in his chambers of imagery”, i.e. in the secret chambers of his heart.
The word ‘idols’ is translated ‘demons’ in the Septuagint in Deut. 32:17 and Ps. 106:36, 37 … etc.
The word Carnival, is derived from two Latin words, ‘Caro’, meaning flesh, where the English word Carnal is also derived; and the word ‘leavar’ which means ‘to leave’. In those Carnivals, therefore, complete liberty is left to the flesh. That is probably why men and women, in that day, wear whatever they wish of available masks, so they hide behind their masks and do what they please without anyone watching or to be accountable to. The origin of these carnivals goes back to the times before Christianity, where a carnival would precede the pagan Lents. The popes of Rome accredited these habits, surprisingly on the same occasions as before, and made it to precede the church-ordained Lents too(46). The idea of committing any and all kinds of sin during the carnival is the proximity of going into fasting, Lent is starting the very next day, where fasting will cause all their sins to be forgiven!!
Molech is the god of the Ammons. He was resembled by a hollow statue made of brass on the image of a person with an ox’s head, sitting on a throne and his arms erected and extended forward. The worshippers were to lit fierce fire inside the statues hollow body until the arms reddened hot, then the human victims, of their children, were to be placed on the arms while drums sound deafeningly so they do not hear the screaming of their children while they were grilled alive(48) (Deut. 12:31).
Contrasting the Oreb, we find the dove (Gen 8:7-9), and contrasting the Zeeb we find the lamb (Jn 10:12). This is what we see in Christ according to Jn 1:29,32, since He is the Lamb of God upon whom the Holy Spirit had landed in the form of a dove. If savagery and uncleanness are the clearest principles of the Devil which are embodied in paganism, holiness and meekness are the clearest Godly principles as are depicted in its most glamorous form in our Lord Christ, and also as depicted in Christianity.
Dr. Kurt Koch lists 47 different satanic practices and explains them in his book, “The Devil’s Alphabet.”
No wonder then that Manasseh, the evil king, when he indulged himself in heathendom, he also got quite deep into these devilish practices, so it was said about him, “And he built altars to all the host of heaven in both courts of the house of Jehovah. He also caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom; and he used magic and divination and sorcery, and appointed necromancers and soothsayers: he wrought evil beyond measure in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger” (II Ch 33:5,6)
Both Germany and Great Britain were reported to have used astrology during WWII(50)!
In three consecutive times the failure of astrologers and magicians was reported in the Word of God, in Babel, itself being the cornerstone of magic and astrology (Dan 2, 4, 5). In spite of this, humans insist on using their help instead of leaning on God.
In the thirties of the twentieth century, appeared, for the first time in England, a section dedicated to the readers of newspapers about astronomy. From there, the practice was imitated in the entire world(52).
When the young son of David died, he said, “I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” (II Sam. 12:23).
From this we notice that it was not the request of the repulsive king, nor it was the crafty evil practiced by the woman, which recalled Samuel. Neither Saul nor the woman were able to have their voices heard by the spirit of Samuel in its place of comfort, much less bring it to the earth. It is thought that it was not even something that was permitted by God, but conceivably it was a direct order given by God. Samuel’s saying to Saul, “Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up?” resembles what happens with a faithful servant whom his master arouses at midnight, to open the door for whoever is knocking at mid night. The first words the servant utters to the late knocker would be, “why do you disrupt me out of my sleep?” even though it was the order of the master that made him rise and open the door, not the knocking at the door.(53).
Some people erroneously think that Hades is a place in the lower divides of the earth! But studying the word of God reveals that Hades is not a place but a condition. It is often associated with death in the Bible (I Co. 15:55; Rev. 1:18; 6:8; 20:13, 14) which indicates its being a condition rather than a place. We notice in what was said about the rich man in Luke 16:23, that he lifted his eyes in Hades (a condition) while being in torments (a place). Therefore, Hades is the condition in which all people exist from the moment of their death until they are resurrected and united with their souls and bodies. For the sinful, Hades is to go to the place of torments, for the righteous it is to go to the place of comfort and condolence (presently, they go to be with Christ). But the huge difference between the two places is not declared in the Old Testament. The first time that difference was mentioned in the New Testament, when The Lord Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Lk 16:19). It is then explained at more details in other places in the New Testament.
One of the American Encyclopedia comments, under the word “magic” that more than half the population of the world today believe that magic can have an effect on their lives.
Using the magic ring and lantern, in the famous play, Aladdin collected a huge wealth and became a Sultan. It is noteworthy here to mention that similar legend exist in the folklore of all people of Europe, India and China(55).
Many five-star hotels avoid using the number 13 in numbering their rooms. The room number 13 is usually named something like 12a. Many hotels or other buildings skip the number 13 in naming their floors, or if they do use it, they do not use the entire floor for residence but dedicated to other things such as offices or stores.
How sorry I was when I heard that some of the so-called believers revert to such metaphysics while they claim that their relationship with Christ is real. Don’t these brethren deserve the rebuke of the prophet Elijah when he said to the evil king, “Is it because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron?” (II Ki 1:3). How far is this attitude from that of Isaac, the faithful, who, when his wife could not bear children, he prayed to God, and God responded favorably to him. (Gen 25:21)?
That is to say “something of pagan character.” Literal translation of the phrase ‘bad thing’ is ‘a word from Belial.’(57).
Satan and
the Official Systems
“The ruler of this world is judged;” (John 16:11)
In the days of Our Lord Jesus Christ on earth, Satan took Him on top of a high mountain, and showed Him - in a moment of time - all the kingdoms of the habitable world, and said to Him, “will give thee all this power, and their glory; for it is given up to me, and to whomsoever I will I give it.” (Lk 4:5, 6). The Lord did not deny the devil his claim of having the world given up to him. On the contrary, Jesus confirmed this, when He said three times that the Devil is the ruler of this world (Jn 12:31; 14:30; 16:11) which leads us to understand that the world, in its present situation is indeed subject to the dominion of Satan.
Also, Christ said about the Devil that he has a kingdom (Mt. 12:26). Moreover, the Scripture tells us that the seat (i.e., the throne) of Satan is in this world (Rev. 2:13). Therefore, the kingdom of Satan is indeed this world.
THE KINGDOM OF SATAN AND ITS ORGANIZATION
Lord Jesus said that Satan has a kingdom and it is very-well organized (Mat. 12:25, 26). This kingdom consists of a large number of angels who fell with him. All of those angels are under the government of Satan, their chief (Mt. 25:41 & Rev. 12:7). The Bible teaches us that the Devil is not omnipotent, even though he is very powerful. Although his movement is very quick, he is not omnipresent. In order for the Devil to guarantee authority over the entire world, he assigns certain work to everyone of his angels. They are all, in the end, ruled by him.
The apostle Paul resembled the kingdom of the Devil to an organized army when he said, “because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against principalities, against authorities, against the universal lords of this darkness, against spiritual [power] of wickedness in the heavenlies.” (Eph. 6:12). The commander in chief of that army is Satan. He moves here and there, checking the conditions and circumstances of the world everywhere. When he appears before the throne of God he offers his report, “And Jehovah said to Satan, Whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” (Job 1:6, 7 & 2:1, 2). Under the administration of Satan, there exist a group of chiefs “principalities”, then the sultans “authorities”, then the masters “lords” of this world, governors of darkness. These are lower in rank consecutively, until you get to the hosts of evil spirits in the heavenly places (according to the Bible Applications Translation).
Yes, millions of angels follow the Devil in his military kingdom. If he can dwell in one person using a whole legion {i.e., about 6000 demons (Mk 5:9), then how many are the number of these spirits which follow this enemy?
THE WORLD’S LEADERSHIPS
In order for the Devil to consolidate his grip and domination upon the entire world, he had deployed his formidable army into all parts of the earth to prevail over its peoples. It is natural, then, that he targets world personalities, in particular, who set the politics of the nations and control their destiny. We can deduce, from the Word of God, that behind every leader of the world, whether political or economical leader, there is a center of power that belongs to the Devil. The apostle Paul calls these centers “principalities.” On a lower level of these principalities there are angelic authorities, and on a yet-lower level, there are angelic lords, and so on…
The vision of Micah the son of Imlah that is reported in I Ki 22:19-22, clarifies for us the extent of Satan’s influence in the decisions taken by the kings of the world (especially regarding those decisions related to wars). Micah says, “I saw Jehovah sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him, on his right hand and on his left; and Jehovah said: Who shall entice Ahab that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-Gilead? And one said after this manner, and another said after that manner. And there came forth a spirit , and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him. And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said: Thou shalt entice [him], and also succeed: go forth, and do so.”
From this we understand that the Devil can influence the leaders of the world and inspire them with their plans and their decisions. This is exactly what the Devil will do with all kings of the world after the rapture of the church, since he will gather them together in Armageddon as we shall study in chapter 21 (See Rev. 16: 14-16).
If we refer to the prophecy of Daniel, chapter 10, we find in it an allusion about the realm of invisible and the spiritual powers. The profit mentions some angelic, evil principalities, such as “the prince of the kingdom of Persia” (verses 13, 20), Also “the prince of Greece” (verse 20). With this, the prophet does not mean the human leaders of Persia and Greece, because;
First, he relates them to Michael, the chief, appointed by the Lord, to the people of Daniel, i.e. the Jews (Dan 10:13, 21; 12:1); and,
Second: because this prince of Persia caused the delay of the angel sent by God to Daniel carrying a message from Heavens. Could the prince of Persia, or any human leader whosoever, stop the movement of the angel of God in his tracks for 21 days? Absolutely not.
Therefore, the principalities mentioned here are meant to be the leaderships of evil angels belonging to the Devil, and appointed to the kingdoms of Persia and Greece. On the opposite side, we see the prophet mentioning the archangel Michael, one of the chief princes, who is appointed by God to attend to the affairs of God’s earthly people, i.e., the Jews.
This chapter (Dan. 10) resembles the previously mentioned one (I Ki 22) in showing that what happens in the realm of invisible reflects visible effects on the earth. The motion of the nations, wars and politics, as well as the issues of security, etc. are all planned in the high realm of the invisible, and executed in the lower realm of visible.
The result of the opposition between the prince of Persia (the angelic prince in the invisible) and God’s people, resulted in a change in the policies of the kings of Persia towards this people. Even though those kings originally showed a degree of sympathy with the Jews, represented in the call issued by King Cyrus to whoever wanted to return to Jerusalem to build a temple for God, but soon enough we find his ancestors deviate from this line. We do not understand any reason why this deviation took place, other than being inspired by “the prince of Persia”, i.e., the Satanic lordship appointed to Persia. We see him first delaying the arrival of the angel to Daniel 21 days, then affecting a change in the heart of the king away from sympathizing with the Jews to resenting them, so they tried to stop the building of the temple (Ezr 4), then many of the opponents appeared during the renewal and the building of Jerusalem (Ne 4). Indeed we see them trying to annihilate the people altogether in Est 3.
THE ACTUAL POWERS OF INFLUENCE
We have seen that there exist evil powers behind all governors of the world and also behind all of the world’s influential personalities in all areas. These powers try to influence their decisions, and, whatever happens on earth is but a reflection to what is planned in the upper realm. We shall expand on this idea further.
In the eighty-second psalm we read Asaph saying, “God standeth in the assembly of God, he judgeth among the gods. How long will ye judge unrighteously, and accept the person of the wicked?...I have said, Ye are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High; But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.” Some suggest that the gods mentioned here are not only the human governors, but the meaning extends to include the spiritual powers behind them. In this heavenly scene, where God Himself is standing amid the assembly of God, we find Him judging, not only the human rulers, but also the demonic powers behind them that influence their decisions and lead them to injustice and unrighteousness. These powers, here, are called: gods .
The eighty-second psalm speaks essentially of the period of persecution and discrimination that will prevail upon the earth after the rapture of the church to Heavens. It is the period called, “the hour of trial, which is about to come upon the whole habitable world” (Rev. 3:10) That is why in the conclusion of the psalm we hear the cry of the pious among the people of earth, “Arise, O God, judge the earth; for thou shalt inherit all the nations.” This is exactly what is bound to happen when Christ rules all the earth with justice, and the saints ruling with Him. But before then, He will punish the host of the high ones on high [considering them to be the planners], and the kings of the earth upon the earth [considering them to be the executioners]. (Isa. 24:21). He will not only judge the evil kings on the earth, but before then, He will judge the spiritual powers influencing them , those called “the hosts of the high”, and punish them “in the high.”
A NECESSARY CAUTION
When we say that all kings and presidents and prominent personalities of the world have invisible demonic powers behind them, we do not mean to make a statement that all rulers or presidents are evil. No doubt that there were righteous rulers in the course of history who had fear of God in their hearts and in their rule. As a general principle, there is no dominion except from God. The Bible teaches, “the Most High ruleth over the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will” (Dan. 4:17), and, “For there is no authority except from God; and those that exist are set up by God” (Ro. 13:1). So, the enunciation of Solomon, the wise, still applies, “The king’s heart in the hand of Jehovah is [as] brooks of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” (Pr. 21:1).
Even if some kings and rulers do not admit this source of authority, even if they never recognize this fact, the words of God still hold true, “the heavens do rule” (Dan. 4:26). What we intend to convey here that with respect to the importance of the role of the governors in administering the affairs of the world, Satan, is trying to combat the ways of God on earth, is a lot more interested in those rulers than ordinary people . It is conceivable that he appoints a prominent angel of his troops to stand behind each of these important human personalities to inspire them with thoughts that harmonize with his plans. We believe that these invisible powers behind these rulers are the reason of filling them with hauteur, arrogance and pride, to the extent that some of them imagined themselves to be gods and required worship from their subjects. We can also reason the injustice, slavery, and savagery of some rulers with the same reasoning (such as Hitler , Stalin, Mao- tsee- tong, etc..) i.e., the demonic powers behind them. Chapter 28 of Ezekiel, speaking first about the chief of Tyre, i.e., its haughty human king, then speaking about the King of Tyre, meaning Satan himself (as we have seen in the third chapter), gives a confirmation to these ideas.
THE PRINCE OF THIS WORLD, THE DEVIL
Someone may wonder, “How can it be possible that there is ultimately one person, namely the Devil, who dominates all world systems, since he is the prince of this world, in spite of the deeply different ideologies and politics of the world’s nations? How can this happen among the nations when at the same time there are strives and quarrels against each other, even wars? The difficulty here is only in the minds of those who do not know enough about the Devil and not recognize his plan to dominate human kind. The British are not the first to invent the policy of “divide and rule”, but rather the Devil had beaten them into it, long before any human could adopt it. The events of the world today are exactly what The Prince of the World want. The Devil and his angels are in full collaboration as allies against man. What is really astonishing is the fact that man himself often collaborates with them against his fellow man or against himself!
Have you noticed when in the Bible was the Devil first called, Prince of This World? No one gave him this title except our Lord Jesus, and that was in three different occasions, all of them were related to the cross (Jn 12:31; 14:30; 16:11). This does not mean that the Devil was not deserving of this title before or after these occasions, but rather he was and still is the same, since the fall of man from the Garden of Eden until the appearance of The Lord Jesus Christ in His Second Coming in eminence and glory. The Devil, the Prince of the World, is the dominant power over all systems of the world, but he plays his role behind a curtain. It suits his well-being to work invisibly so he can stretch and reach-out to the limits he desires out of mankind. Once, and only once, however, he was forced to abandon his mask and enter the battle overtly. That one time is at the cross. It was a moment where the battle was a detrimental one where camouflaging would not work, so he showed up without cover. At that time he gathered the opposing powers of the world to connive together, and the entire world became one mighty power. Even Herod and Pilate, who were previously enemies, became friends (Lk 23:12). Even the chief-priests of the Jews who hated Rome before, now show allegiance to the Romans’ Cesar (Jn 19:12, 15). The entire inhabitants of the earth, no matter how different they were and no matter how diverging are their beliefs and doctrines, are gathered together under the leadership of one person: Satan. That is why he was called then, “The Prince of This World.” It was a time where the connotation of this name was evident. The words of the second Psalm were fulfilled, “Why are the nations in tumultuous agitation, and [why] do the peoples meditate a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the princes plot together, against Jehovah and against his anointed: Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their cords from us!” (Ps. 2:1-3). Yes, indeed it was at the cross when the Devil was vividly pictured as “The Prince of This World .” But it was also in the cross, the judgment of the world took place (Jn 12:31) as well as the judgment of the Devil, the Prince of This World (John 16:8-11).
WARS:
Considering the previous discussion, there are issues that are worthy of attention and deserving contemplation. Why do flames of war ignite everywhere? Why did not humanity know peace in all of its long history except in rare occasions? Why did not the regional wars stop since WWII? Why did the number of dead and wounded in these regional wars exceeded even the wasted lives in world wars?
Opinions of analytical politicians and military personnel are many and varied. But, when the Word of God is dealt with, there is ultimately one reason, the Devil, the prince of this world. If Christ “hath made wars to cease unto the end of the earth” (Ps. 46:9), which is bound to happen factually and not-too-long in the future, in the upcoming world system, in the happy kingdom of Christ, when they, “shall forge their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-knives” (Isa. 2:4), no wonder then that the Devil, the prince of the existing world, is the agitator of wars in all of the earth!!
Why did Cain rise up against his brother and kill him? The Scripture gives us a clear-cut answer: because Cain “was of the wicked one“(I Jn 3:12). That wicked one is still imposing his destructive activities on the world until today . The Bible says, “He was a murderer from the beginning” (Jn 8:44). The future days, after the rapture of the church, will witness a tremendous progress in this area, as we shall discuss, later in this book, when we speak about the future of Satan.
THIS EXISTING MISERABLE WORLD
Yes, indeed this world is suffering in complete wretchedness. If this world is under the authority of “the murderer” (Jn 8:44), how then would its condition be?! The military spending became the highest burden on all nations budgets and consumes the best part of the national gross income. Experts say that there are so much weapons piled up in the world that are enough to destroy the entire world twenty times. The “per-capita” share of weapons, for every individual in this world, is four tons of explosives! Four tons of explosives is the share of every individual, at the same time when 500 million humans suffer hunger (62) and malnutrition!
Pitiful indeed is this world while being under the domination of the liar (John 8:44). There we see, everywhere, how all of its political systems, rightist or leftist failed. How all of its ideology miserably failed in bringing happiness to mankind. Communism, with its ignoring the individual and glorifying the community, has failed. Capitalism, with its granting all liberty to the individual, has corrupted him!
Pathetic indeed is this world! Satan had said once, “all this power, …. is given up to me, and to whomsoever I will I give it” (Lk 4:6) How then can a world as this not be pitiable?! No wonder that, while famines crush people savagely, and while hundreds of millions are living under the poverty line in destitute hunger, children die in the embrace of their mothers, but other nations throw away their excess produce in the sea to keep prices high. And few individuals blow-away, on their pleasures and excesses and gambling tables, treasures, enough to feed whole tribes and nations. The path of economic policies now - a - days does not recognize a shared dialogue between North and South, but rather, it lets the rich gets richer and the poor poorer!
Is this the beautiful world, the one that God had seen “very good” when He created it? Is this the world that was increased in its beauty with the shining suns and moons, the majestic mountains and the blue seas, the breath-taking meadows and the colorful trees? What happened to the world to be converted into a piece of hell simmering with wars and greed, massacres and hatred. The earth is soaked with blood and adulterated with injustice. The seas become fields for grapple and riot. Even the aerospace is no longer limited to singing birds, chanting to the glory of The Creator, but became an arena for savagery, barbarism and blood thirst. Moreover, we keep hearing now about the “planetary wars.”
IS THERE HOPE?
This forlorn world is broke, economically, politically and morally. The world will continue to lament in its misery as a result of poverty, theft, drugs, murder, adultery, homosexuality, terrorism and extremism. Man, the crown of creation is the one that’s afflicted with the most misery, without any hope in its renewal or repair despite the continuous efforts by the sincerest of its children, as long as the prince of this world is that dangerous enemy. The words of Scripture remain truthful, “I will overturn, overturn, overturn it… until he come whose right it is; and I will give it [to him].” (Ez. 21:27). Yes, until Christ comes. Yes, please come O’ Lord!
After the Rapture of the church, when injustice has exceeded all limits, the remnant will cry: “Arise, O God, judge the earth; for thou shalt inherit all the nations” (Ps. 82:8). The creation of God awaits that moment!
O’ Lord, You have had limitless patience with the unjust rulers and the evil and subtle demons behind them, so they exceeded all limits in their injustice and over did the imagination of the hearts. There is no hope left in social or political reform “until he come whose right it is” which is Your Blessed Person. And, in Your happy kingdom You will be the Prince of “the … world which is to come” (Heb. 2:5), and those who will govern with You, and become the real power behind the actual kings of the earth at that time, are those who believe in Your name (Lk 19:15-19).
Yes, You will be The King, O’ Most High, the Ancient of days, only You deserve the many crowns. But You, in Your benevolence, and the richness of Your grace, will give government to the saints of the high to reign with You. To Your Glorious Name we extend all indebtedness and gratitude!
Satan and
the Public Opinion
“The ruler of the authority of the air, the spirit who now
works in the sons of disobedience;” (Ephesians 2:2)
The Epistle to The Ephesians is the only part of Scripture that describes the Devil with the title, “ruler of the authority of the air.” Even though it was mentioned only once, it strongly depicts the extent of penetration of the Devil in people’s lives, as well as his influence upon them. Just as air surrounds people from every direction, and just as air permeates every thing, so is the Devil, having no walls or barriers to separate him from people. He has no stumbling blocks to impede him from reaching them. Just as air fills each and every void in our planet, and surrounds it completely, the Devil dominates all of this world.
In real life we see how strong is the influence and effects of air on mankind. Through the lungs, air mixes with blood and, thus, influences the entire body. If the air is poisoned, it takes very little time for the toxic effect to spread into man. If this is the case, we clearly see how strong is the allegory, and how truthful this name of the Devil, “ruler of the authority of the air.”
In addition to the previous discourse, we should find it easy to understand the parabolic meaning, engulfed in this title, which reflects the “general mood .” The Devil, being the ruler of the authority of the air, dominates the prevailing mood. The frame of mind of all mankind has its key in the hand of “the ruler of the authority of the air.”
Someone once said, “It is very likely that, until now, we have but a faint idea about the extent of the influence of the Devil on the moods of mankind, or his effect on thinking.” This, to me, seems like a true statement, since the Devil holds the “keys to the world.” He influences the intellectual leadership of the societies, controls the media, and guides the education systems. People pictured the Devil as an ugly person, having an evil face, fearsome horns, and a tail ending in an arrow! This sarcastic image of the Devil was in itself an inspiration of the Devil himself, to trick mankind into believing that they would recognize the Devil when they see him. The fact is, nevertheless, he hides behind every thing that is beautiful and attractive with people so he can influence them. He uses the brilliant people, the scientists and the great in every field. His influence extends to dominate the TV and radio broadcasting systems, publishing houses, education systems, expositions, theaters, and everything else. God said that mankind is the Devil’s “goods,” and the world is his home (Lk 11:21). The apostle John said, “the whole world lies in the wicked [one]” (I Jn 5:19). How strong is this expression indeed. It is just as firmly as the mother holds her baby, the Devil embraces this entire world.
We have seen in the previous chapter how the “prince of this world” influences the world’s official systems, including the men of governing powers. Here we see how “the ruler of the authority of the air” having dangerous dominion over the cultural atmosphere, and the wide base of mankind. We shall analyze some of the mocking styles which the Devil used to reach people, so he indeed attained what he wanted, and perhaps even more.
THE PHILOSOPHERS AND THE INTELLEGENTIA
In order to reach mankind, even mockingly, the Devil influences the philosophers and inspires them with ideas and principles that are designed to drive a wedge between man and God. The philosophers may not be the ones who have direct impact on the populace, but they undoubtedly influence a group of elite leaders, who, in turn, have the designed direct impact. Those leaders use simple methods that appeal to people and effectively influence them, such as outlining education programs, planning the activities of the media or entertainment. Thus, they transmit the Devil’s influence to the wide base of multitudes.
We cite an example of this chain of influence with what has happened in the West during the last two centuries, where contemporary philosophies and doctrines appeared and were able to destroy solid rationales in the souls of people. This horrible alliance has, no doubt, killed the spirits and the value systems in many a populace.
The second half of the eighteenth century, Germany witnessed the appearance of the philosopher “Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) , best known as the author of the Critique of Pure Reason,” whose philosophy is to refuse any fact or fiction outside the realm of the five senses.
A short time later, the same country has seen the philosopher “Hegel” who glorified the physical society and tried to promote the idea that the society does not have to abide by the moral laws, and governments do not have to follow any discipline. Some of his intellectual offspring were Karl Marx and Adolph Hitler.
Karl Marx, a German Jew, appeared in the nineteenth century and founded Communism. By communism he alluded to a society without any ranks or classes, and he aimed to change the world over. Unfortunately, this actually happened after his death. He glorified violence , since his philosophy was based on a principle that says that clash would provide the dynamics which would catapult society into some new development (67).
At the same time with the atheism of Marxism, “Charles Darwin” also appeared in England, in the late years of the nineteenth century. His famous theory was to deny creation and the existence of a Creator. His theory is often referred to as “Evolution,” and it had a wide and dangerous influence on a tremendous sect of educated people all over the world.
About that time also appeared “Sigmund Freud” in Austria. He is the father of psychoanalysis. The most important feature of his teaching is that mankind is motivated by desire, and, everything starts and ends with sexual lust. He taught that there is no purpose for the existence of man, and there is no aim for humanity. He also said that there is no God, and consequently, everything is allowed and every desire is warranted.
And, there are many others….
When these poisonous seeds, implanted in the hearts, grew, the crop was harrowing. With the arrival of the twentieth century, the time was ripe for the harvest, of those philosophies being planted over the course of two centuries, to be collected. The harvest, as expected, was traumatic. “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind” (Hos 8:7).
As a result of the philosophies of Kant and Hegel appeared Hitler who possessed an overwhelming desire for grandeur even if it means destruction of nations and populations. Thus emerged the Second World War that gave the world a bitter taste of widespread destruction and horror, and left the globe with tormenting morals whose effects cannot be counted.
As a result of the philosophy of Karl Marx, appeared Lenin, who added his own development to the theory of Communism and exaggerated some of its parts. He promoted the slogan of his teacher Marx, “Religion is the opium of nations.” Everywhere Communism went it worked to brainwash the youth and the children to erase the idea of God completely from their minds and hearts. That demonic system mocked God and directed its sarcasm against Him, promoting that God is too busy in His Heavens to attend to people’s needs, so He is leaving them to starvation. What did this evil system do to mankind? It affected the murder of about 60 million people. After it was finished with the killing of millions, it failed miserably and its corruption buoyed to the surface. Lately, its leaders have admitted their bankruptcy.
As a result of the theory of Darwin, that theory that was rejected by the science itself since it was proven incorrect, the majority of the multitude of scientists and intellectuals look at religion and the Holy Bible with mockery. They consider religion and the Bible as remnants of a distant retarded past!
As a result of the Freudian theories, we see the widespread of promiscuity, shameful nudity, and absolute permissiveness that conquered the population of the Western Hemisphere in particular. Morals have deteriorated, families destroyed, children became vagabonds, men and women became homeless, and the youth is reverting to committing suicide!!
How true it is, that these philosophies had killed people and destroyed souls. The philosophers told the populace, “There is no God” so the multitudes were lost. “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They have corrupted themselves, they have done abominable works: there is none that doeth good.” (Ps 14:1) The intelligentsia persuaded the people to sever the bonds they have with God, and told them that this way they will live comfortably. When they cut the ties, they could not live at all, comfortable or not. They exterminated God from their thoughts, so the Devil moved to fill the void with alternatives. He offered them drugs and narcotics, and he offered them heresies and occulted practices and black magic. He provided them with the type of water that when they drink it they become thirstier. As a result, their feeling of vacuum intensified, and suicide became an outlet for the youth. Indeed suicide became one of the most reasons for death among the youth of the most advanced nations of the world, according to the most accurate statistics.
THE MEDIA, THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
The Devil does not only possess people and manipulate them as he wishes, but he also dominates the worldly systems and uses the arts to promote his goods. Here we shall analyze some of these arts, namely Music and Singing, Dancing, Cinema, Television and Videos.
- POETRY: Most of the poems is versed to glorify what God does not approve.
Lamech, the seventh generation from Adam, and a descendant of Cain, the evil man, was the father of all poets. In the first poetry versed he combined two of the Devil’s characteristics: conceit and lust. These two characteristics are the same ones later entitled in poetry as pride and flattery. Lamech said to his two women, “Ye wives of Lemech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for my wound, and a youth for my bruise. If Cain shall be avenged seven-fold; Lemech seventy and seven fold .” (Gen 4:24)
MUSIC: The Devil was able to employ this type of art into his intentions. It is well known that music has a significant effect on man’s spirit. The funerary services music, for instance, leads one to be depressed, while patriotic music affects enthusiasm. A religious hymn creates an atmosphere of worship (See Dan 3:5, 7). Similarly, there is a kind of music that stimulates lust and affects the spirit in a way similar to drugs. Through this kind of music the Devil, the ruler of the authority of the air, can reach deep into man and conveys his messages that entraps the person.
The inventor of this kind of art was Jubal, the son of Lamech, “Jubal: he was the father of those who handle the harp and pipe” (Gen 4:21). He taught people how to sing using the harp and pipe. When the poetic verses was combined with tunes, i.e. the words of Lamech and the tunes of his son Jubal, the poetry with the music, the Devil perfected the singing word with the spoken tunes to beautify sin (See Job 21:12 - 15), so the forbidden became acceptable, beautiful and desirable . How many times every day, I wonder, did the old serpent repeat what it did with mother Eve in the Garden of Eden!!
DANCING: With the rhythm of the tunes, people not only learned to sing but also to dance. History recorded that in one shameless dancing party, the greatest person born of women, John the Baptist, was murdered (Mt 14: 3-11). But history in general omitted mentioning a countless number of persons born of women, who were killed, spiritually, by the dancing floors, nightclubs etc.
What a pity I always felt, over numerous youths I have seen repeatedly, while going back to my hotel room after delivering a Christian service, in a foreign country I was visiting, waiting in a line to enter into one of the Disco dancing clubs where mad dancing was performed. The Devil taught them how to dance, and then slaughtered them. The slaughtered bird dances out of pain while dying. If Nero had held his harp and sang while Rome was burning, the Devil had converted the whole world into a burning Rome, while pushing it into hell, marching to the tunes of demonic music, and preoccupied with singing and dancing !
CINEMA: Did it ever attract your attention, those long lines of people standing in front of the box office of the movie theaters, tolerating the heat of the summer sun, or the freezing temperatures of winter nights, hurrying to enter into the dark hall to take their seats, where there is no light except what reflects from the big screen. And, “If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness!” (Mt 6:23).
The influence of the movie industry is no secret anymore. How many times did we hear about young people, just leaving a movie theater, to imitate a method of stealing they just watched, or copying a style of murder? How many times we hear about young girls leaving a movie theater to run away with a boyfriend, just as the star heroine did? In best cases, how many times did the movies, and its scenes of indecency or violence or bloodshed, leave a lasting effect that became a toxic food for a person, irritating him, with tumultuous agitation, or distracting his attention at his time of seclusion or meditation? (Ps 2:1)
TELEVISION-AND-VIDEO: With this deadly weapon, temptation today is complemented with electronics, decorated with all tricks of light and sound, and is so easily obtained and available as close as arms-length or a push of a button!
As for its effect, it is without equal. Sometimes I hear the people repeating a phrase or an expression, only to discover later that the phrase was verbalized in one of the shows. How clear is the influence of the ruler of the authority of the air in what is being transmitted through the air waves, and caught by receivers existing in all homes or stores or even vehicles, then finds its way into the body of the human being, to torture the sight or the hearing of the righteous among them, and to spiritually murder the rest of them, when the poison that entered their bodies through their eyes or ears, finds its way into their brains and hearts, and ultimately into their bloodstream and all of their being.
While it is true that there are cultural benefits in TV’s, who would deny that TV also provides vast material to excite desires of the flesh and the passions present in the hearts of all people. The Devil knows how to appear as a friend offering useful help, but he also perfected how to fold poison into the manna.
We hear the cries of the social activists, terrified by what is being carried by satellites such as sexually explicit movies, entering the homes of everyone whether you like it or not, and the tricks practiced by the broadcasters to evade censorship.
How terrible is the environment around us has become, polluted with every known pollutant as if we needed even this one over the satellites.
In front of that apparatus, the man of our century spends the hours of his days, one hour after the other, one evening after the other, in which the TV evacuates the minds and hearts of its contents only to refill it with all whatever is trivial and disgusting. It converts people into sullen persons, so the Devil can pour whatever he pleases in them. That is exactly what is meant by brainwashing. Unfortunately it is washing with dirty water.
Although many of the world’s intellectuals are convinced with the shortcomings of the TV, they themselves, just like all others, became so dependent on this appliance, that the TV is now a modern form of enslavement, inherited slavery from the world systems when it was officially outlawed.
The danger of TV on the Christian believer is that it gives him an open window to the world, that makes him, unconsciously, think just like the worldly people, behaves like them, and speaks the way they speak. The warnings of the Scripture, not to be conformed to the people of this age, can be lost, and the complimenting of God to the bride, “A garden enclosed is my sister, [my] spouse; A spring shut up, a fountain sealed.” (Song 4:12) can go in vain.
As for the others, this appliance is fully capable of wasting precious time of those who are unaware of it. Does the Devil have a better opportunity than to waste the time and occasion for those who can otherwise use it for repentance and for getting closer to God?
These are but samples of the goods of the ruler of the authority of the air, the Devil. The goods that he promotes vigorously, as he works hard in the souls of people to buy it. The scene depicted by the apostle Paul, in the chapter from which we cited the verse at the opening of our chapter, consist of a seller, a mediator, and a buyer. Listen to what the apostle says in this verse: “and you, being dead in your offences and sins—in which ye once walked {1} according to the age of this world, {2} according to the ruler of the authority of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience: {3} among whom we also all once had our conversation in the lusts of our flesh, doing what the flesh and the thoughts willed to do, and were children, by nature, of wrath, even as the rest” (Eph 2:1-3)
This is the infamous threesome once more: The World, The Devil, and The Flesh. The age of this world is the corrupted system invented by the Devil, since he beautified the world to keep man in it afar from God. It is the “supermarket” of the Devil.
The flesh is the customer who stands in front of the showcase of this supermarket, admiring all of what is displayed, and longing to possess everything there at any price.
The derisive merchant who tempts his clients and convinces them of buying these rotten goods is “the ruler of the authority of the air.”
Yes, how much does the Devil try to provide man with what satisfies his physical and fleshy hunger to keep him distant from God. But the question is: Can he realize this with all he can provide? Does the world have what it takes to fill the vacuum of the human heart?!
No. “because all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world is passing, and its lust, but he that does the will of God abides for eternity.” (1Jn 2: 16,17). Not even the Devil himself is capable of filling your emptiness and satisfying your hunger. Not lechery, not the ruler of the authority of the air. Only the Originator of the breath, the breath that was breathed by God into man when He created him in the Garden of Eden. Only God can make man happy. How truthful is Saint Augustine of old when he said, “O’ God. You have created us for Yourself. And our souls will never find comfort except in You.”
“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come ye, buy, and eat: yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price! Wherefore do ye spend money for [that which is] not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye [that which is] good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” ( Isa 55: 1,2).
The spirit mentioned here is likely meant to indicate the Devil, who is the chief of all evil spirits (v22). This whole scene is apparently allegoric, and is meant to show that the demons that were followed by Ahab in his idol-worship will be the same cause and means of his destruction.
Once more, the Bible alludes to wars in the realm of invisible in the Epistle of Judah, when The Epistle speaks of the disputing between Archangel Michael and Satan about the body of Moses (v 9). We can deduce from the Word of God that this war took place when Moses died and God buried him (Deut. 34). It was never mentioned that any one of the people knows where the grave of Moses is, to prevent the people from worshipping Moses body. The people then were fond of worshipping holy remnants and the like (Compare to II Ki 18:4). But Satan, even though he led the people several times to rebel against Moses during Moses life, wanted his body to be exhumed so that the Israelites would worship him (See Mt 23: 29-32). It is sorrowful to note that the Devil succeeded in this area since many saints are being worshipped today in Christianity all over the world against the thoughts of God and His direct orders!
Even though Michael did not allow Satan to exhume the body, he did not rebut Satan’s allegations, but only referred him to the Lord to rebuke him.
No doubt that psalm 82 and its reflection in the New Testament John 10, are some of the most difficult chapters of the Bible. Most preachers see that the gods mentioned here are the judges of Israel, based on some verses such as (Ex. 21:6; 22:8, 27). But in the meantime we notice:
FIRST: There is no direct quotation in the Word of God, that these rulers are gods. On the other hand, the angels, whether righteous or evil were called that way more than once (Ps. 97:7; Heb. 1:6; Ps. 96:5, ..)
SECOND: The expression “children of the Most High” was never said about humans, rulers or otherwise. It was only used to speak of angels only (Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7 & Ps. 29:1; 89:6, ..)
THIRD: While it is true that the children of Israel are called “The congregation of Jehovah” or “the assembly of the Lord” (Num. 16:3; 27:17; 31:16 & Deut. 23:1-3, Josh. 22:16, ..); but here we find a different expression, not the assembly of Lord, but the “assembly of God” and the name of God here is “El” which means: The strong One. All these suggest that we are here watching a heavenly scene of the ruling powers gathered together around the Almighty governor.
Dr. David L. Cooper(58) confirms this interpretation and says that verse 7 (shall die like men) supports that interpretation. If those gods were only human rulers they would naturally die like men and fall like one of the princes, without any one considering this to be a punishment for them.
Many had failed to understand correctly what came in John 10:34-36. The Lord did not say that the Jews are the ones meant by that, neither are the judges nor the rulers. The words of Lord are, “If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came” and the Lord puts it in a sort of generalization. Those to whom the words are directed in Psalm 82, God called them gods. Not only He called them gods, but also children of the Most High (because Jesus was speaking of Himself as The Son of God). If those, being judged and condemned, are gods and children of the Most High, how about the Judge Himself?! And if the angels are gods and children of the Most High, though they were but creatures, how much more Our Lord Jesus Christ the Creator, the Eternal Son of God?
The expression, “ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.” will be confirmed with what is going to happen to Satan when he is thrown with his angels to Sheol then to the lake of fire and brimstone (Compare Isa 14:9 - 16). What is really strange is that people have preceded the Devil and his angels to Sheol, and will precede them again into the lake of fire and brimstone (See chapter 22). This explains the words of God, “shall die like men.”
W.R. Newell(59) confirms this interpretation also.
The expression “all the foundations of the earth are moved” (Ps. 82:5) means that the righteous principles, e.g. straightforwardness, justice, truth, mercy and holiness, which make life on earth possible, will be shaken.
Ruling the world now is indeed in the hands of the angels. But in the future world “the habitable world which is to come”, submission will be only to The Son of Man, and to His heavenly saints (Heb 2:5).
From this peculiar situation we can see a justification for the apostle Paul’s persuasion to offer prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving for the sake of the rulers and the kings and all those who occupy important or prominent positions, simply because they, more than anyone else, need the prayers of the faithful and the help of God so that their subjects can enjoy “a quiet and tranquil life in all piety and gravity; “ (I Tim 2:1-3)
Walter Langer, in a book entitled, “The Mind of Adolph Hitler” says that Hitler was not just a single personality, but actually two that inhabit the same body. The one was very soft and sentimental and indecisive. The other was hard, cruel and decisive. The first weeps at the death of a canary. The second cries that, “there will be no peace in the land until a body hangs from every lamp post … nothing but death, annihilation and hatred.”(60) Is not this a vivid indication that behind Hitler there was a demon to whom he had surrendered completely?!
It will happen twice again in the future where the Devil shall appear overtly. Once after the rapture of the church and shortly before the appearance of The Lord Jesus Christ in eminence and glory, when the Devil will gather together the kings of the earth and their hosts to make war with the appearing Christ. (Rev. 19:19). The second time is after the millennium when he gathers the nations from all four corners of the earth to fight against the beloved city (Rev. 20:7-11). (See chapters 21, 22).
One of the missionaries, who was working in Tibet, immediately before the onset of the Great World War, attended a heathen dance. While he was watching the black magicians in their works, one of the magicians stormed towards the missionary, with a sharp knife in his hand, while in a state of what seemed to be uncontrollable excitement under the influence of the evil spirit occupying him. The magician then said, `our great gods, altogether, have gone to Europe` The missionary did not understand what was meant by that statement, until a month later, when he returned to China and heard about the onset of the great war in Europe. Then he understood(61).
Here are some more statistics:
-As a result of a famine in the two years of 1984 and 1985, the human beings who died of hunger or hunger-related causes exceeded the number of the dead in the World Wars I & II combined. The annual number of people died of hunger in those years was 35,000 daily, or 24 people every minute, 8 of which were children (63).
-One tenth of the resources spent on the weapon’s race is enough to spare every man, woman and child from dying of hunger or malnutrition (64).
- The world’s expenditure related to weaponry is 2 Million dollars a minute!! Among every 100,000 persons in the world there are 556 soldiers under arms compared to 5, only five, physicians. The average cost of one soldier is $20,000 while the average cost of educating one child is $380(65).
+ Iraq, in the Gulf War alone, was burdened with a loss of $200 Billion!
In our daily language we use similar (to be deleted parabolic) expressions such as “atmosphere of animosity,” “poetic atmosphere" or “somber mood.”.. etc.
Richard Rambrandt wrote about Karl Marx that he did not become an atheist, but a God- hater. When Engels met with Marx for the first time he wrote of him: a monster possessed by thousands of devils (66).
We can add to conceit and lust, appearing in this first poem, two more characteristics: rebellion and violence.
In order to realize what kind of world we live in, just remember the Beetles superstar Brian Epstein who made 14 million dollars in five years, then was found dead at the age of 32, poisoned by overdose of narcotic drugs. The Beetles band was famous in the sixties and used to boast in its being “more popular than Jesus Christ.” (68).
A lot of the modern tunes of Disco are inspired by tribal music from the pagan clans of Africa and Latin America.
Satan and
the Nominal Christianity
“But I fear lest by any means, as the serpent deceived
Eve by his craft, [so] your thoughts should be corrupted
from simplicity as to the Christ.” (II Corinthians 11:3)
We have reviewed, in the last five chapters, the activities of the Devil in the world to corrupt the public life and also the religious life. It did not suffice the Devil to succeed in these areas, so he also conducts numerous trials to corrupt Christianity itself.
THE WHEAT AND THE DARNEL
In the parables of the Kingdom of Heavens, in Matthew 13, The Lord explained that the Devil tried, from the very beginning, to pervert the great work that Jesus did in the world. Christ told us, in the parable of darnel (Mt 13:24-30; 36-43) that the Devil directed his guileful trials to the same good seeds that were sowed by Christ Himself. He tried with all his power to destroy the harvest, using his “ungodly [persons]” (Jude 4), those whom he had entered “unnoticed” to Christianity, those whom God called “darnel” in this parable. “and the enemy who has sowed it is the devil” (Mt 13:39).
Today, when I try to review some of the books written by enemies of Christianity to attack it, I notice that they particularly attack practices and thoughts attributed to Christianity, although these have nothing to do with real Christianity. Then, I realized the cynical plan of the Devil. First, he infiltrated into Christianity ungodly persons who corrupted its essence as well as its exterior. Second, he turned outwardly to use other people dedicated to uncover the blemishes of this essence and exterior, striving to demolish Christianity because it contains these mental heresies, yet Christianity is completely and perfectly devoid of those misleading themes.
The darnel, in the parable verbalized by The Lord, is not merely meant to resemble Nominal Christians, who are related to Christendom, but rather they are the making of the Devil, the “children of the evil.” Those who, by infiltrating them into Christendom, carry with them demonic teachings they are worthy of and versed in. How savagely was Christianity exposed to these teachings from its inception. God allowed the seeds of these heresies to enter into Christianity at the apostles' time, being the vessels of inspiration, so they can face up to them and write to us, in the Holy Scripture, the divine answer to those heretical thoughts. Let us just mention some of the phrases used in the Epistles to describe these thoughts:
“a different gospel” (Gal 1:6), “an appearance of wisdom” (Col 2:23), “deceiving spirits and teachings of demons” (I Tim 4:1), “various and strange doctrines” (Heb 13:9).
THE LEAVEN OF THE PHARISEES AND SADDUCEES
The Lord Jesus Christ warned His disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
These two groups, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, are diametrically opposed to each other. The Pharisees are the traditionalists in their age and time, while the Sadducees are the free thinkers, or, in the language of today, the modernists.
The Pharisees aggrandized the traditions to the level of The Word of God, and considered both the traditions and the Bible just as holy. This eventually led to denouncing the Word of God and belittling it to the level of their traditions, “making void the word of God by your traditional teaching” (Mk 7:1-13). Sadducees, on the other hand, did not add their own traditions or any thing else to the Word of God, but to the contrary, they eliminated from it all that is not acceptable to their minds and what is not agreeable to their intelligence . (See Mark 12:18-27) As if the first group added to the Word of God, and the second subtracted from it. (Deut 4:2; 12:32; and Rev 22:18,19). Simply speaking, this is the difference between what traditions have done to Christianity and what was precipitated by modern spirits, as we shall explain- God willing- in this chapter that deals with the fight of the Devil against Christianity.
DELUSIONS IN CHRISTIANITY
First, we will deal with the first kind of yeast, the yeast of the Pharisees. So, let us shed some light on the four phrases mentioned above:
In Gal 1:6, the apostle speaks of “a different gospel,” i.e., a gospel of a different kind. It is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ that produces salvation to the sinner, but a gospel of the Devil, that is, if the Devil indeed has anything that might be called gospel or good news. So, the apostle continues to say, “which is not another [one]; but there are some that trouble you, and desire to pervert the glad tidings of the Christ” that is to say it is not a gospel altogether, it is the possibility of some group irritating you and aim at perverting the Gospel of Christ. (Gal 1:6,7). In an early period, after the beginning of Christianity, there was an attempt to change the Gospel of Christ and even destroy its context, not to oppose it, but to adulterate it. The main operator behind those “lying teachers” was the Devil himself who excelled in using them for “Judaising” of Christianity, i.e., overwhelming Christianity with Judaism. The movement also featured trials to mix the saving grace of The Bible with practices of the Jewish law and routines of rituals, and considering grace and faith alone inadequate and insufficient for the salvation of the sinner.
In Colossians 2:23 we read about the “appearance of wisdom“ which is another attempt by the Devil depicted in the addition of human philosophies and oriental mysteries (such as asceticism, abstemiousness) to the Christian doctrine. In the previous occasion, namely the different gospel, the Devil tried to divert the Bible from its straight path and stain it with a Jewish dye. He tried to change the principle of “Salvation by Grace”. This time, he added things to Christianity that may seem good to the non-examining eye, as if Christ alone is not enough. Just as the apostle Paul fought the first attempt of the Devil vehemently, he also warned, forcefully, against these additions and the appearance of wisdom. He said that those additions are apt to distant the soul away from Christ, resulting in loosing the ultimate prize, i.e., The Christ. (Col 2:4, 8, 16, 18).
But in 1 Timothy 4:1, we find what is even more dangerous, “teachings of demons.” The apostle saw, with his prophetic eye, what is going to emerge in Christendom, after the repose of the apostles. He said, “But the Spirit speaks expressly, that in latter times some shall apostatize from the faith {i.e. the complete, whole of the pure Christian teachings}, giving their mind to deceiving spirits and teachings of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, cauterised as to their own conscience, forbidding to marry, [bidding] to abstain from meats, which God has created for receiving with thanksgiving for them who are faithful and know the truth.” Did not this exact thing happen? Did not these teachings, which the apostle described as teachings of demons, enter into Christendom?!
All in all, “various and strange doctrines” (Heb 13:9) entered into Christianity since the very beginning. These strange doctrines have absolutely no base or support in the Word of God, The Holy Bible. Its only foundation is “people’s sayings” and the “traditions of the fathers.” (See Mk 7:7, 13). About the subtle hand of the Devil in this, it cannot be any more clear. It is sufficient to just remember what God said about the “cult” that tried from the very beginning to judaise Christianity, when He pointed them out, to the angel of the Church of Smyrna, saying, “those who say that they themselves are Jews, and are not, but a synagogue of Satan.” (Rev 2:9).
INTENSIFICATION OF EVIL
The journey of Christianity over the ages is portrayed - as many of us know - in the letters directed to the angels of the seven churches of Asia Minor.(Rev 2 and 3). The fourth church, The Church of Thyatira (Rev 2:18-29) points to the dark middle ages, and in particular to the papal church starting from the seventh century. In that letter we see how evil has increased within the church , and to what extent the Devil had penetrated it. The Devil, who knows how to use entrapping instead of force when force seems to be of no avail. Oftentimes, he had used trickery, strategy and entrapping to obtain gains in Christianity, where the force or power did not serve him well. Listen to the very words of God:
“And to the angel of the assembly in Thyatira write: These things says the Son of God, he that has his eyes as a flame of fire, and his feet [are] like fine brass: I know thy works, and love, and faith, and service, and thine endurance, and thy last works [to be] more than the first. But I have against thee that thou permittest the woman Jezebel, she who calls herself prophetess, and she teaches and leads astray my servants to commit fornication and eat of idol sacrifices. And I gave her time that she should repent, and she will not repent of her fornication.” (Rev 2:18-21)
Jezebel, historically, is the wife of King Ahab. She is considered the most sinful woman in the entire Bible. She appeared in the time of Elijah The Prophet and transformed the entire Kingdom of Israel to paganism, worshipping Baal. In her days, the prophets of Baal and Asherah had a lot of clout. They used to eat at the table of Jezebel while the covenant with God was overruled and His altars demolished and His prophets were killed with the edges of the swords. (I Ki 16:31-33; 18:13,19; 19:10).
Just as the evil woman Jezebel appeared in the history of the Kingdom of Israel, spiritual Jezebel appeared in Christianity, in the Church of Thyatira (the role of the papal church). That corruptible system which did not only penetrated paganism into Christianity, but rather converted the church in general into pure paganism decorated with Christian slogans, and discriminated against the honest people of the flock of God!
It is not that we see no witnessing to God or an honest remnants to Him in those days, it is just like in the days of Ahab and Jezebel there were thousands who are not visible except to the eyes of God, who never bowed to Baal and who never kissed him. “Yet I have left [myself] seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth that hath not kissed him.” (I Ki 19:18). Similarly, in that role, there existed the “remnants,” who separated themselves from the evil of the general situation “But to you I say, the rest who [are] in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I do not cast upon you any other burden;” (Rev 2:24), and thus, they became target to the hatred of the “nominal church,” and were accused, by the church authority, of heresy. The nominal church then excommunicated them and approved their murder and torture because, as the church claimed, they were “communicating in secrecy with the Devil and they know the depths of Satan” (See Rev 2:24)!!
But because we are writing about the Devil, we must stop at this perilous expression and deal with it. Jezebel, in the Church of Thyatira accuses the remnants, the honest to God, that they know the depths of the Satan. How fearful that expression is, imagine: “They know the depths of Satan”!!!
Who are the ones to whom these words really apply? Are those the “remnants” in Thyatira who are honest to The Lord, or are they really Jezebel, her system and her children? That woman who teaches spiritual and moral fornication, and promoted kneeling to the idols?!
THE DEPTHS OF SATAN
Let us consider, in a somewhat hasty, but hopefully sufficiently clear, manner, the condition to which Christianity had fallen into during the dark ages. This quick consideration is aimed at giving an honest reflection of the horrible picture of the effect of the dark ages:
First and foremost; What do we say about the practice that induces a shiver all over the human bodies and senses of the pious, which is kneeling before pictures and images, raising incense to it, and attributing miracles to it. All this happens in spite of God’s countless warnings in the Divine Word against this kind of paganism (Deut 4:16, 23, 25, 28; 5:8; 7:25, 26; 9:12; 16:22; 27:15; … etc.). This practice had converted Christianity, in the view of non-Christians, to a pagan religion. Is not this indeed “The Depths of Satan”?!
How about the pagan teaching that infiltrated Christendom to say that God will judge people according to a “balance” or a “scale.”! Where in the entire Bible do we find any trace to this strange teaching which was infused by some sinful-hearted people with the purpose of extortion of the wealth of the rich!!
When Jezebel embraces such teaching, which concerns the most serious matter of all, which is the eternal destiny of man, and when the teaching is entirely based on the myths of paganism , not on the precious Word of God, would not this lie directly into “The Depths of Satan”?!
What about the teaching of “The Purgatory ”? that heresy which enforced the hearts of the sinners to live in sin, since it opens to them an imaginary door for hope, after their death. It also resulted in the hurrying of the widows demanding liturgies from the priests (on the third day of death, and the seventh, and the fifteenth, and the fortieth, and on the annual anniversary the first and every year thereafter) seeking the shortening of the agonies of the purgatory from their spouses. So, they “devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext {obviously the pretext of greed} make long prayers. (Mk 12:40).
When a human being claims that he is in the place of the Son of God, the “Vicar of Christ ,” then extends that authority by issuing a creed stating that he, in his teachings, is infallible, which gives him a divine authority resulted in the gradual neglect of the Bible, since it was lost among the creeds, the teachings and the traditions of the Church, and the heaping decisions of the Church Synods and the directives of the popes. What else can be said about this matter, other than “The Depths of Satan”?!!
How about the dangerous deviation regarding the teaching of the Eucharist, the weekly ceremony to remember the Lord and His redeeming death on the cross. It became a repeated sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins of the dead and the alive!! This menacing teaching which explicitly denies the completion and perfection of the work of Christ upon the cross “For by ONE offering he has perfected in perpetuity the sanctified.” (Heb 10:14). What about the priests saying that they offer Christ himself as a sacrificial slaughter every time they conduct a mass?!!
These are but a few samples of the strange and varied teachings (Heb 13:9). But whoever studies the Bible will discover more and more. That student of the Bible shall then lament with Jeremiah the weeping prophet saying, “How is the gold become dim! The most pure gold changed!” (La 4:1). This is why when a famous physician, by the name of Linacer, at the time of King Henry the Eighth of England, who was born a Roman Catholic, when he read just a little part of the New Testament, after he saw it for the first time, tossed it from him with impatience and a great oath, exclaiming, “Either this Book is not true or we are not Christians(72).” Of course, we know that the Bible is perfectly true.
It was said, rather accurately in my opinion, that the corruption of the better is the worst kind of corruption. Isn’t that what actually took place in Christendom that set itself apart from its Christ? Even though it still carries His name, decorate itself with His cross, uses His Book for oath, but it practically denies the loftiness of His person, the completion of His work, and the sufficiency of His word!
What a pity when Christianity is deprived, by who else other than the Devil, of the unique and sufficient intercession of Christ, and give it up to many other intercessors. The Devil has taken the way of the Holiest that is sprinkled with the pure blood all the way to the presence of God, and gave instead of it the “prayers of the saints.” He took away the perfecting conscience, and gave instead a “loosing of the priest.” He took away the guiding light of The Holy Spirit, and the shining sparkle of the Holy Bible, and gave instead the twinkling of the candles. He took the beauty of holiness and gave instead the grandeur of rituals. How precious is what he took away, and how cheap is what he gave instead!!
PROTESTANTISM , WHAT’S FOR IT AND WHAT’S AGAINST IT
Let us now consider the other side of the picture, and be concerned, for a while, with the yeast of the Sadducees in Christianity. Indeed we do not deny that the Reformation Movement, which was led by the pioneers of renewal, was a tremendous blessing in Christianity. It is the movement that is credited with releasing the Word of God from “prison.” It liberated the Holy Bible from obscurity into the hands of the people. Did the Devil stand cross-armed and helpless in the middle of the reformation wave? No, of course not. He hurried into trying to corrupt it from inside. We will limit our discussion here to the most jeopardous of these trials, namely his seclusion of those who dared to hunt the Holy Word in what is known as the catastrophe of “Higher Criticism.”
“Higher Criticism ” is an expression coined by Professor Eichhorn, one of the freethinkers and rationalists in Germany. It is meant to direct critique to Biblical origins as well as the writings of the prophets and the apostles themselves. The followers of "Higher Criticism" dropped out the fact that the Word of God is inspired by God, they therefore placed themselves above the level of the Bible to examine it and accept from it what their minds consider logic enough for them and reject the rest. Regrettably this idea dominated the minds of thousands of intellectuals in Europe and in America afterwards. This phenomenon swept Christianity and plowed in its path many groups, and created within Protestantism, a new phenomenon dubbed “Liberalism.”
In the old days God called Moses from the burning bush and said, "Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." (Ex. 3:5) The followers of High Criticism chose not to pay attention to respecting any holy ground, but rather they stepped with their soiled shoes and evil thoughts over that holy ground. The Devil even tried to find his way to teach in some of the theological seminaries in the West, so those seminars produced graduates who are not servants of God but rather puppets of the Devil. They deny the inspiration nature of the Holy Bible. They deny the divinity of Christ, His atonement and His resurrection . All in all they did not leave a single Biblical truth to sublime over their lowly heads, without rejecting it. Some of those who follow the worldly and demonic philosophy coined, “God is dead” occupied prominent positions in Christendom. If they were only just to themselves and the people they serve, they should have announced that they are atheists not theologians.
THE DUTY OF THE FAITHFUL
Thus, the true church today stands torn between two opposing currents, both are the works of the Devil: The petrified tradition, and the modern and liberal intellect. As if the church is following the cruise of the ship of the apostle Paul sailing to Rome, and falling between two seas (Ac 27:41). The Bible states that the general condition has no hope in repair or reform. What, then, is the duty of the honest and the faithful?
The honest must separate himself immediately from all forms of paganism the Devil succeeded in infiltrating into Christendom. This is God’s call to all the faithful, “I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” (Rev 18:4,5).
It is also the duty of the honest to reject at once all the temptation of the Devil, modern or liberal, those that lead to the diminishing of the role of the Bible or its stature. The order of the Lord is, “Hold fast the form of sound words,” (II Tim 1:13).
If the heart is weeping for what has become of Christendom, it is also bleeding in sorrow for those who caused it, and for the tools that the Devil is still using within Christendom to lead many souls astray and to destruction. They will find out, one day, on the day of visitation, how horrible their crimes were, the crimes they committed against the millions who followed them, “Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.” (Jude 11). The heart also weeps over him who was tricked with these trades, him who was tempted by the adulterer’s arts and crafts, and, “With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.” (Pr. 7:21)
We, at closing of this chapter, urge the faithful, with an advice and a persuasion. The advice is, “if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.” (Jer. 15:19).
As for the persuasion, it is, “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.” (II Tim2: 20,21).
Satan and
the Agnostic Cults
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but prove the spirits,
if they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out
into the world. …We are of God; he that knows God
hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. From this
we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” (I John 4:1,6)
We have concentrated our discussion in the last chapter on the activities of the Devil within Christendom since its beginning, and how did he score successes in deviating it away from the true and pure Word of God. In this chapter we will try to analyze the other side of the coin, so we will be discussing the activities of the Devil inside modern churches and agnostic cults, spanned in the world in the last two centuries.
THE PARADE OF THE HERESIES
In the last two centuries appeared several new heresies and cults such as(74):
- Jehovah’s Witnesses, or the cult of “Watchtower.” This cult was founded by Charles Russell (1856-1916) in the USA in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Their membership has already exceeded 2 Million people in more than 200 countries. They have their own translation of the Holy Bible in English and other languages. Their own translations are loaded with their poisons, and they also have their own periodical entitled, “The Watchtower.” This magazine is issued in seventy nine languages and its circulation is 10 Million copies.
- The Adventists, or the “Seventh Day Adventists,” the cult that stresses vigorously the Second Coming of Christ. They are the followers of Mrs. Ellen G. White (1827-1915) of the USA. Mrs. White founded this sect in 1844. It is now spread in 200 countries and their membership reaches about 2 Million people. They established hospitals, schools and colleges in several parts of the world.
- The Mormons, or “The Church of Later Day Saints of Jesus Christ.” By “Later Day Saints” they mean their founder Joseph Smith (1805-1844) who was born in the USA and published his book, The Mormon Book, in 1830. The membership of this cult is about 2.2 Million people, mostly in North America. They have several missions that scored no significant success except in some European countries, notably England.
- Christian Science, the heresy that was founded in 1879 by Mrs. Mary Anne Baker Eddy (1821-1910). They now have about 3,300 churches, two thirds of which are in the USA, and the remaining one third is in Europe and Canada. Their membership reaches about 7,000 “general practitioners” providing the services of healing.
- The Modernists, the offspring of “Higher Criticism” that was born in Germany and spread over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Many churches in many denominations in the West have Modernists among their members.
- Spiritisms, is the cult that was revived in the first half of the nineteenth century. Near the end of that century the USA had 16 Million Spritisms and they issued 200 newspapers of their own.
- The Theosophists, the followers of Mrs. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky who started to delineate her teachings in 1875 in the USA. Starting in the year of 1882, her followers spread outside the USA into more than 60 countries. They are known to believe in all religions.
- Swedenborgian Sect, named after Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) who established his sect in Sweden in the early eighteenth century.
- Christadelphianists, a movement founded by the British physician John Thomas in 1848, hence the nickname Thomasists. It was not called Christadelphian until 1864.
- The Buchmanianist, named after the American clergyman Frank Nathan Daniel Buchman (1868-1961). Buchman founded his sect in the first half of the twentieth century after splitting off the Lutheran church where he was originally ordained. His group was first called the “Oxford Group,” and later renamed as “Moral Re-Armament.”
WHY DOES GOD ALLOW HERESIES?
This is an important question. The answer to this question, however, is not too difficult. We read in Deu 13:3, “for Jehovah your God proveth you, to know whether ye love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” Hence, God allows the lying teachers just as much as He allows discrimination. He employs this in the chaffing of the wheat, to separate the distinct from the weighty. He, thus, tests the love of the faithful and his allegiance to His Word. The cause of the first fall in the Garden of Eden was that man neglected the truthful Word of God, and believed the lying Devil. It is exactly the same thing happening with those who walk in the PARADE OF THE HERESIES
Even though the market of the delusions is more active and alive, but in the end, no one buys from that market except those who despise The Word and ridiculed the clear proclamations of God, plentifully found in the inspired Book, “and in all deceit of unrighteousness to them that perish, because they have not received the love of the truth that they might be saved. And for this reason God sends to them a working of error, that they should believe what is false,” (II Th 2:10,11).
A BIBLICAL PORTRAIT: NAHASH THE AMMONITE
In the story presented in I Samuel 11, we find an important lesson: Nahash the Ammonite, and remember that his name, in Hebrew, means “a snake or a serpent, the old Devil” went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you.” They surrendered to him in despair, But Nahash the Ammonite replied in conceit and barbarism, imposing a severe and awful condition on them as a price of having a pact with them, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel.”!!
How truthful this picture is, representing what the Devil does with all of those who do not open the Book. Gilead means “testimony” and Jabesh means “dry.”
Jephthah the Gileadite, of old, had scored a victory over this enemy before. The word Jephthah means “to open,” hence, whoever opens the testimony of God conquers the Devil. But those who live in the “dry testimony,” who are plentiful in Christianity today , will be subject to the same acts of the Devil that he made with the serpent Nahash with the inhabitants of Jebesh Gilead, i.e., gouging their right eyes!!
The gouging of the right eye means the ability to see from one side only, the side that was chosen by the serpent for them. The followers of the modern heresies can see the Scripture from one side only. They are no different from their master, the Devil, since they know that it is “written” but they do not know what God had said in His reply to the Devil, “and it is also written.” They do not have full visibility of the Word of God, but they can recite some verses from here or there and use it to approve of their heretic faculty, ignoring the remainder of the Scripture.
But why did Nahash choose the right eye to gouge, perhaps in the old wars, the fighters held their swords with the right hand and the shields with the left. The shields used to obstruct visibility by the left eye, and it was the right eye that was left to see. If the enemy gouges the right eye, the entire war becomes an impossible task for them, even if they possessed the necessary swords. Similarly, every one following the parade of the lies of the heresies which we outlined above or similar ones, will never be able to fight Satan or score victory against the serpent, even though they may read the Bible. In reading their Bible, they see only one side of it, the side that is depicted to them by the Devil and his demons.
THE COMMON DENOMINATOR
Someone(77) said: “It is one mark of anti-Christian religions, masquerading as Christian, that but are not true Christians… The branches of a tree may travel in contrary directions, but they are supported by the same trunk and feds by the same roots”. This also describes the, agnostic heresies. Even though these heresies differ to a great extent among each other, they all meet at a bitter origin, that is, belittling of the glory of Christ, devaluating of his works, and denying the eternity of torture for the sinners.
No wonder we see all this in these cults, because the common denominator for all of them is the Devil . No wonder that the person of Christ, and the work of Christ on the cross, in which the Devil was completely defeated, are the target of the major effort of the Devil. (See Mt 13:28,39 and Gen 3:15 & Col 2:14,15 and Heb 2:14). No wonder that the Devil ever tries to soften the results of his defeat on the cross, and refute the person and works of Christ as of little value!!
We will concentrate, in the next thesis on the first two points mentioned above, namely “belittling of the glory of Christ and devaluating of his works,” and delay the discussion of denying the eternity of torture for the sinners to the later part of the book, where we appointed one whole chapter to this serious issue.
THE MARKET OF THE DECEITFUL HERESIES
What do the modern heresies say about the person of Christ and His redemption?
Jehovah’s Witnesses say: Christ is a perfect human who had existed before incarnation since He is the “firstborn” of all God’s creation, but not because He is God (their corrupt doctrine promotes the idea that He was Archangel Michael). It follows, from their denial of Jesus’ divinity, that they excluded from their belief the doctrine of Redemption, and said that one innocent life can redeem only one lost life and no more. That is what is being promoted by those who call themselves Jehovah’s witnesses while they are indeed witnesses of falsehood, since their mindset contains a complete denial to Jehovah and His Book, as we shall see later.
The Seventh Day Adventists, although they approve of the divinity of The Son, they throw darts at his perfect humanity, since they say that Christ, in being incarnated, had assumed a sinful nature just like us. As for the atonement they have some strange teaching that promotes that The Lord Christ stayed 18 centuries practicing priesthood in the first sanctuary! With His own blood, he continued to advocate to the benefit of the repenting believers so to guarantee them pardon and acceptance from The Father, even though their sins were still recorded in the “books of records.” !! They also say that Christ went, in the year 1844 AD , to the Heavenly Sanctuary where He started to purify it in order to complete the work of redemption!! Then they add that Christ, considering that He is the chief of priests, will place the sins, when it is removed from the Heavenly Sanctuary (they think it is not removed yet, according to their corrupted doctrine) upon the Devil , then He will undertake the task of eliminating the Devil and his followers from existence!!
These pitiful people shall have neither Sabbath nor comfort waiting for them. If they deny the completion of the work of Christ, and His victorious cry on the cross, “It is finished” (Jn 19:30), and the testimony of The Holy Spirit that He, “found an eternal redemption.” (Heb 9:12), and, if they imagined that the Devil is going to be their ultimate savior, then we ask, what a fate is waiting for them?!!
The leaders of the modernists deny the Godly nature of Christ, and consider Him only a “perfect human being.” About the atonement, they comment in some sort of mockery, “The religion of the slaughterhouse belongs only to the dark ages”!!! making a laughingstock of the symbolic sacrifices in the Old Testament, as well as of the redemptive death of Christ on the cross on our behalf.
How destitute these modernists are, who dared to offend the Holy Book, forgetting its teachings directed toward the dark ages. If they do not repent, there will obviously be a dark eternity waiting for them, without lights and without days, so they pay for their sarcasm. (Isa 21:12 & II Pe 2:3).
Those who belong to the cult of “Christian Science ” say that Jesus is a normal man. He lived in the world indeed as a normal man, but Christ is a divine idea ! Therefore they add that the blood of Our Lord Jesus was of no more value seeping on the cross than its value when it ran in His arteries and veins during His daily life.
Those whose doctrine has no science and no Christianity, if they denied the power of sin itself, is it any wonder that they also deny salvation from sin, and deny The Savior?!!
The Mormons deny the virgin birth of Christ. They claim that the birth of Jesus Christ was materialized by the marriage of God (which they mix with Adam, i.e., Adam is God according to their cultic ideas) with Mary, which resulted in Christ!! They also say that the atonement of Christ deals only with the sins of Adam (It is not clear how they consider Adam to be God on one hand and committing sins on the other!! E.g., a sinful God!!!!). Salvation, in their denomination, is obtained by the individual through his good works and through baptism!!
The followers of Spritism see Christ as only a spiritual mediator, while the Theosophists do not confess that Christ is God (moreover, they also deny the person of God) but consider Christ as a ranking spirit that lead humans to spiritual exaltation, no different than any religious leader of any part in the world. They believe that the “Spirit Christ” occupied the body of the “disciple Jesus” for three years! As for atonement, they do not believe in death on behalf of someone else, and the impossibility of wiping out any sin, even the smallest, by any god.
Add to this the heresies of the Christadelphianists, otherwise known as “the brothers of Christ,” the Buchmanianists, the Swedenborgianists and the Masons, they all deny the divinity of Christ and His eternal Sonship and the completion of His atonement on the cross. Even though they offer a variety of goods to suite every taste, but it seems that the Book allude to them in the Epistle of Jude, “These are spots in your love-feasts, feasting together [with you] without fear, pasturing themselves; clouds without water, carried along by [the] winds; autumnal trees, without fruit, twice dead, rooted up; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shames; wandering stars, to whom has been reserved the gloom of darkness for eternity.” (Jude 12,13).
BEWARE!!
When Jude said, “These are spots in your love-feasts” he used a Greek word that was never mentioned in the whole New Testament except here. The Greek word is “spilades” and is generally used for a rock in the sea, or the rock covered with water, a reef. This may be the meaning here which points out to a hidden object under the water, there but not to be seen, and subjecting the ships to hit it and sink(78). This means that those teachers are very dangerous, but their danger is covert.
In the Second Epistle To Timothy, the apostle Paul warned against two of the puppets of the Devil, Hymenaeus and Philetus; [men] who as to the truth have gone astray, …, and overthrow the faith of some.” (II Tim 2:17, 18). We know that the names in the Holy Book have meanings and connotations. The name Hymenaeus means “a song of a wedding” and the name Philetus means “the beloved.” Both of these men, it seems, were attractive enough in their personalities and their style, but they offered the adrift not the truth. Are not the hidden rocks and the attractive men persuade us to beware of outer appearance?!
Today, there are thousands around us who are attracted to some servants or religious leaders who appear to have a lot of sincerity and concern about the faith, but they do not know, or even care to know, whether these teachers deliver exactly what the Word of God says or not. But, let me tell you that the falsifying teachers frequently are sincere and faithful to their principles and may even appear to be full of human concern for religion (Mt 23:15). This is not strange for the followers of the Devil. Their work may even be associated with performing miracles. Did not the Devil supposed to work in the future lying prophet so he would show wonders “and then the lawless one shall be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus shall consume with the breath of his mouth, and shall annul by the appearing of his coming; whose coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,”(II Th 2:9) ?!! This, of course, is the Devil’s design for the select to go astray. (Mt 24:24)
Beware of the glittering appearance! The servants of the Devil have the appearance of piety (II Co 11:15). Beware of the miracles, the performance of miracles is not a proof that the system or the principles are godly (Deut 13:1, 2). Do not think that the Devil does not exist except in the harlot houses or the places where drugs are taken. He is able to stand at the pulpit of the church, he can and does hold the Holy Bible and preach. Not everything shines is gold, and not every dull metal is worthless!!
WHAT DOES THE SCRIPTURE SAY?
We have discussed what the followers of the destructive heresies say (II Pe 2:1) about The Lord Christ and His cross. Now, let us review what The Book says, which is assuredly different from what the Devil says in his misleading ways. Not because the Devil is ignorant of the truth of Christ. He had already admitted that “Jesus” is “Christ” and He is “Holy” and He is “The Son of God” (Lk 4:34, 41), but he wants to lead the people amiss so they would not recognize who he really is “in whom the god of this world has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, so that the radiancy of the glad tidings of the glory of the Christ, who is [the] image of God, should not shine forth [for them].” (II Co 4:4)
The Lord Christ said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his Only-Begotten-Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal.” (John 3:16). The apostle Paul said, “that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from among [the] dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Ro 10:9). This clearly means that there is no life and no salvation without The Lord Christ. Believing in Him as a great human being, or even believing in Him as a great prophet, will be of no avail whatsoever. He is “God,” and He is “The Only Begotten Son of God,” who died for us and been resurrected.
Even though He was born at the fullness of time from a virgin (Isa 7:14 & Mat 1:18), He was not created, since He Had an eternal existence, far before His coming in flesh. He has no beginning, exactly like The Father and The Holy Spirit. He said to the Jews, “Before Abraham was, I am ” (John 8:58). That Child who was laid in a manger in Bethlehem, is the same as of old, “And thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall he come forth unto me [who is] to be Ruler in Israel: whose goings forth are from of old, from the days of eternity.” (Mic 5:2 also see Mt 2:6). That One who was hung on the cross in Golgotha, “for in him all the fullness [of the Godhead] was pleased to dwell, and by him to reconcile all things to itself, having made peace by the blood of his cross—by him, whether the things on the earth or the things in the heavens.” (Col 1:19, 20)
He accepted to be incarnate so He performs His role in the redemption of all people, so He took a perfect human nature, contrary to what the Adventists claim, since He is The Holy (Ac 2:27; 4:27), the One without a sin (Heb 4:15), He has no sin in Him (I Jn 3:5), and He is The One who had committed no sin (I Pe 2:22), moreover, He is The One who did not know sin (II Co 5:21).
There is no other, who can undertake this task, the task of mediating, intercession, between God and man “For God is one, and [the] mediator of God and men one, [the] man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all, the testimony [to be rendered] in its own times;” (I Tim 2:5, 6). He is the only mediator for at least two reasons: First because He is God and Man put together (Job 9:32, 33), and Second, because He died as a ransom for us to pay our debt in full (Job 33:23, 24).
FLEE FOR YOUR LIFE
Have you seen yet, my dear reader, how distant they are, the followers of those heresies, from the Biblical truth? Shouldn’t we tell them, in the language of Isaiah “[Oh] your perverseness!” (Isa 29:16). You have denied the cross and denied the Man-God who was hanged on it. Expect the worse of fates!!!
That is why I urge every person who reads this book to run for his life from the trapping of these perilous heresies. Moreover, I urge, even those who were caught and subdued by the Devil, to sober-up and feel the snare of Satan, through knowing the truth, so he can escape those devastating fires (II Tim 2:25, 26 & Jude 23).
We have nothing to say to those jeering and those disillusioned people more than what the apostle Paul had said, “But if any be ignorant, let him be ignorant.” (I Co 14:38), but Christ will remain the only “door,” the “way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn 10:7; 14:6). The cross will continue to be the only place where the repenting sinner meets the Loving Savior, to redeem him of his sins.
Let humans make a mockery of The Precious Blood. Let the proclaiming liars set the cross aside. Let the heretic bond together to erect their new tower, a symbol of a religion without blood. Let them wander in the seas and the lands to win one follower. But for us, the faithful, the believers and the children of the Lord Christ, the cross and the crucified will remain our material for preaching the existing grace that is bound to halt, “but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews an offence, and to nations foolishness; but to those that [are] called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ God’s power and God’s wisdom.” (I Co 1:23, 24).
The word “darnel” is translated as “weeds” in the New International Version of The Bible.
The word “leaven” is translated as “yeast” in the NIV. Throughout The Bible, yeast always pointed to evil. The similarity between yeast and evil lies in the nature of evil in spreading quickly, and in its hidden but sure effect (e.g. See I Co 5:6-8; Gal 5:7-9)
Such as “the world of spirits” or “eternal existence of humans” or “resurrection of the dead” and other doctrines (Ac 23:8).

The Church of Rome proclaims that Archangel Michael is the one holding the balance of the Divine Justice. He weighs the good deeds of the person against his bad ones. The side that drops down determines the fate of the dead person, either acceptance or rejection. This strange teaching is completely foreign to the Word of God, but coincides perfectly with a theory that was widespread with ancient Egyptians regarding judgment, after substituting the pagan god Anobis with Archangel Michael (69).!!
The pagan teaching of the purgatory entered the Church of Rome from the year 600 AD at the time of Pope Gregory the Great. We find similar teachings in the mythology of Egypt, Greece and India. It was not officiated in the Catholic Church until 1439 AD in the Convention of Florence. It then became a fundamental teaching that has its own importance and divinity in the Convention of Trent in the year 1546 AD (70).
This heretic phrase is written in Latin on the official crown of the pope of Rome. It is a small wonder that the numeric value for the letters of this phrase is 666, which is the number of the Antichrist.(Rev 13:8).(71).
The word is a derivation of “to protest.” It indicates all of those who split-off the papal system. It does not mean a particular group or church or organization.

Here is a statistic of a poll taken with servants of God, under training, in the USA. The results are tabulated as (73):
56% rejected the virginal birth of Christ.
71% rejected the belief that there is life after death.
54% rejected the literal resurrection of Christ.
98% rejected the coming back of Christ in the flesh to rule on earth.
The statistic warrants no comment on our part.
One of the Researchers (75) mentioned that there are more spiritist mediums in Germany today than Protestant pastors.
If we set aside for a while all those modern cults, and speak of Christian denominations, we face this statistic from the USA (76) and the Anglican (Episcopalian) Church in it:
28% of the members do not believe in anything after death.
22% expressed their opinion as “I do not know”
Out of the remaining 50% who believe in an after- life, only one-sixth of them declared their belief in what the Bible says about heaven and hell. And the same proportion thinks they will be re-incarnated.
As we have seen, the demons are the actual power behind the pagan worshipping. It is also the force moving the heresies and off-shoots within Christianity (See I Tim 4:1).
It is not necessary that everything said by these heresies is wrong. Oftentimes these heresies contain, in one form or the other, many of the great Biblical truths. But the Devil uses that to camouflage the deadly trap, since it contains lethal misrepresentations but may also contain many truthful facts.
The Adventists built this corrupt belief of theirs on a verse recorded in Daniel 8:13,14, regarding 2,300 days and nights. They considered one day and one night meaning a year! And that period of time begins on the year 457 BC, the same time where the seventy weeks of Daniel started (Dan 9:24)!!
The Adventists consider the goat of Azazel, mentioned in Lev 16:10, 21, 22 is a depiction of the Devil !! How insulting that is, since the Word of God assures that Christ is the one who carried upon the cross the sins of His saints (Isa 53:6, 12 & I Pe 2:24).
This heresy highlights the necessity of the body to be free of ailments, unlike Christ who, in His work of atonement, bore all our ailments (ignoring the many verses that indicate that the body of the faithful is not yet redeemed Rom 8:23). Consequently, many of the faithful are subject to ills and thorns in the flesh (II Co 12:7-10; Phil 2:26,27; I Tim 5:23; II Tim 4:20)… Strangely enough, many metaphysical things happen to the followers of this heresy, moreover, some sicknesses are healed. Who else, but the Devil, would respond to the prayers of those who deny the divinity of Christ?
The Bible says, “Every one that believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God;” (I Jn 5:1; also See I Jn 4:2,3 and II Jn 7).
In the Greek origin of the Gospel, the word is “I am” and it is the exact same word recorded in the Septuagint for Ex 3:14 that means “the existing.” This fact is not what is being promoted by Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He is not one degree or one rank of the “fullness,” as is described by the Theosophists who compare Him to Zradecht or Buddha or Ghandi … etc.
Satan and
the True Church
“On this rock I will build my assembly, and hades’
gates shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)
As we have discussed, the Devil is the personal enemy of Christ. Since the church is the body of Christ (Eph 1:22, 23), it is no wonder then for the church to become a constant target of the animosity of the Devil and his offenses in which he tries consistently attacking it, or at least to spoil its nature, and destroy its testimony. That is why the church must be aware of his tide. The Devil cannot stand it to see that there is testimony to Christ anywhere. He will try, by force to destroy such testimony. If force does not work, he will certainly try other tricks such as deception, and craft. That is to say he will try to intensify his attacks like a roaring lion, and, if it does not work to his satisfaction he will try the craft of the serpent. Let us remember first what he has done with the Church of Smyrna in Rev 2, where he heightened his attacks on the church like a roaring lion, but when he failed there, he reverted to trickery to snear the character of the Church of Pergamos using serpent feint.
We do not need to expose the works of the Devil with the church from outside, since this is too clear to need explanation, but rather, we will discuss some of his ways applied to the church from inside.
FIRST: THE DIVISIONS
The Devil succeeded, from the very beginning in planting the seeds of separatism, fanaticism, and disorder, and creating cracks (See for example I Co 1:10-13; 3:3; 11:18). These cracks gave rise, later, to actual divisions, and to disintegrate Christianity into countless sects and denominations. He still applies his destructive activities today, especially against those who distanced themselves from the sectarian current and adhered forcefully and practically to the principle of “One body and one soul,” and try diligently to preserve “the unity of the Spirit in the uniting bond of peace.(Eph 4:3, 4)
In the Old Testament, we read, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Ps 133:1). And in the conclusion of the list of things that are hated by God we read, “he that soweth discords among brethren” (Pr 6:16-19). Therefore, it is no wonder that the Devil would feel exactly the opposite, and there could be nothing more disdained by him more than a united assembly.
In the Book of Songs, the bride is described twice that she is, “Terrible as troops with banners” (Song 6:4, 10). The most important characteristic of the troops is unity in motion, congruency in goals, and dismissal of discord between the individuals in order to elevate the banner, they fight for, above the foreheads. Thus should the church of Christ be, just as the troops raising the banner of The Lord Christ glorified and dignified.
The Devil fears an assembly of such a union, so he tries to infiltrate it with persons who work on breaking the union, dismantling the body and obliterating this godly beauty. This is why the apostle Paul persuaded the believers of Rome to keep an open eye upon those who fabricate cracks and create stumbles (which is completely opposite to his teaching, i.e., One Body and One Soul). Paul did not stop at keeping an open eye on them but urged them to sidestep those people since they do not serve Our Lord Jesus, but rather their own bellies (i.e., their own personal benefit). He explained that they use soft words and appealing phrases to mislead the hearts of the simple Ones, but the crux is not in what they say, since the hypocrites are the best speakers, it is in their fruits. Whoever tray to divide the body of Christ into pieces and plants disparity between the believers to serve his own purpose should be shunned. Then the apostle adds, “I wish you to be wise [as] to that which is good, and simple [as] to evil” because the characteristic of the makers of divisions and stumbles is that they concentrate their speeches and their writings on evil, yet the advice of the apostle is for us to be wise as to which is good, and simple as to evil. Then the apostle bonds those people with the eventual crushing of Satan under our feet (soon enough). From this bonding we understand that those individuals were but a tool in the hand of the Devil, which will be bruised by the God of Peace shortly, when Christ comes back. (Ro 16:17-20).
Once more the apostle connects the divisions and the Devil in the Second Epistle to the Corinthians when he speaks about the repenting brother. He warns the believers against taking extremes and become excessively righteous to the extent that they reject the repentance of the sinning brother, which may precipitate a division within the assembly. Then, the Apostle said: “That we might not have Satan get an advantage against us, for we are not ignorant of his thoughts.” (II Co 2:5-11). Of course, Satan is continuously looking to find a hole through which he can penetrate among the saints.
SPIRITUAL CHILDHOOD
The Devil also tries to weaken the church and thwart its growth. In that, he uses a variety of approaches:
In Acts 5, we find the first of the Devil’s work against the church represented in the sin of lying against the Holy Spirit. Perhaps a more general depiction of his act would be his ignoring the presence of The Holy Spirit in the church. Before the Devil tempted Ananias, and Sapphira his wife, and filled their hearts to lie to The Holy Spirit, he had certainly succeeded in blocking their sight from the fact of The Holy Spirit’s dwelling in the church. How many fruits grew out of this Satanic seed since that time until now?!! Ignoring the dwelling of The Holy Spirit in the church was the direct reason for the retardation in the spiritual growth of the church and holding it back in a state of spiritual childhood.
The Devil cares to keep the church in spiritual childhood and blocks it from reaching a state of maturity, because, in its childhood it cannot sustain the spiritual wars, since the immature is not able to enter into wars (Jdg 8:20) or to overcome the wicked one (I Jn 2:13, 14). On the contrary, when the saints continue to be children, they become like a toy in his hand, since they are disturbed and being carried away with every wind of trickery of the mocking people, such as in Eph 4:14, “tossed and carried about by every wind of teaching”.
This is what the Devil has done, even in the apostolic age, in the church of Corinth. In the atmosphere of spiritual childhood they were preoccupied by themselves not by Christ, “And I, brethren, have not been able to speak to you as to spiritual, but as to fleshly; as to babes in Christ.” (I Co. 3:1; see also I Co. 16:13). So, soon enough appeared between them pride, conceit, fanaticism and envy, the things that are typically carnal and being fed and encouraged by the Devil. In an atmosphere like this one, strife takes hold. Yet our God is not a god of strife but a God of Peace. The source of strife is undoubtedly the Devil.
The apostle James, in his Epistle, before he speaks of jealously, strife, disorder and every evil thing, he had said, “This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish.” (Jas 3:14-16).
Another strategy of Satan’s war against the church to stifle its development is to penetrate the flock of God with “a mixed multitude” just like what he did when the Israelites went out of the land of Egypt. The Devil tried first to block their exodus, and, when he failed, he pushed “a mixed multitude” amongst them , i.e., those who are not actually members of the people of God. Those mixed multitudes were a source of troubles and bitterness for the people of God in the wilderness journey (Nu 11:4).
This is also what has happened since the cradle of Christianity. We read about “lying apostles” (II Co 11:13), “lying teachers” (II Pe 2:1), “lying brethren” (Gal 2:4 and II Co 11:26). They are the weeds planted by the enemy (The Devil) in the field amid the good planting of The Son of Man (Mt 13:25, 38). These weeds are indeed a negative addition to hinder the growth of wheat. Similarly, the lying brethren are not to be considered gain for the church but actual loss. Not a blessing but a disaster.
WORLDLINESS
The church, being connected to resurrected Christ who is glorified in Heavens, is consequently of heavenly nature, as The Lord said, “They are not of the world, as I am not of the world” (Jn 17:14, 16). But the Devil who knows that he will be expelled shortly out of heaven, envies the Church, that has all its blessings in heavenly places, and tries all he can to ruin that nature, by converting the church from heavenly to worldly. This is what has happened systematically since the time of Emperor Constantine the Great (the year 313 AD), who switched to Christianity, from paganism, and declared it to be the “official religion of the Empire.” From that time on the church became worldly in character and in spirit, and the Lord’s words to the angel of the Church of Pergamos were materialized in it, “I know where thou dwellest, where the throne of Satan [is]” Rev 2:13. The church was no longer “estranged” but became dwelling where the throne of Satan is, i.e., dwelling in the world. It became festooned with luxurious architecture, majestic furniture and rare masterpieces. Along with the entry of the worldly spirit into the church, its spiritual strength was abandoned gradually. The Devil did not accomplish this in one deal, but rather affected gradual and small, perhaps even unnoticed, changes one at a time. Today, we can see what many of the churches have become, substituting spiritual rich with material rich, and The Holy Spirit with worldly spirit. Hence, the light converted to darkness and the life decayed into death, and the words of The Lord fit them perfectly, “thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.” (Rev 3:1)
In the Old Testament we see how the Devil tempted David to take a census of the people (I Ch 21:1). The Devil succeeded in turning David’s head (David, the man of God) into greatness by the large number of his people and the vast area of the land, but this matter was displeasing in the eyes of God. (I Ch 21:7). When the people of God try to show the power of themselves, God is displeased. The Devil succeeded again in occupying the mind of King Hezekiah, the pious with his house, “And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver and the gold, and the spices and the fine oil, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found amongst his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah did not shew them.” (Isa 39:2) So, he was absorbed with his own house rather than the house of The Lord. All of this happened in Christendom once more, since so many churches today consider that the measure of its success is the large number of its congregation, perhaps even especially if the membership has in it some socially or politically prominent people, or have a vast wealth. All in all, the churches became musing, for pulpit, its eloquent and charisma; for the pew, its wealth and majesty. So the spirits of the true church are lost!!
When the church substitutes these worldly things for its practiced virtues and its alive faith, this means that the church is pursuing a road of spiritual death, no doubt. The lighthouse is certainly shaken away from its place ready to tumble.
The Devil labors actively hard so that the church loses its separation from the world, enticing it with the excuse to try to reform the world or better it. But the message of the church in the world is not to better it, but simply to witness to Christ, the rejected from the earth, who is glorified in Heavens. The Holy Spirit did not come to the world to better it either, but to glorify Christ and to pick from the midst of the Jews and the Gentiles a bride for Christ, exactly as Abraham sent the elder of his house to Ur of the Chaldeans not to better the state of affairs there but to engage a bride for Isaac, and take her back to him. (Gen 24).
That is why the Devil is trying to divert the church, gradually, from its message and goals, away from its original and authentic path and its noble purpose which is the declaration of the glories of The Cross and the testimony for the eminence of The Resurrected One. In this way he affects every spiritual activity to dwindle, and force the church, in a subtle manner, to take a secondary role and hide behind social or political affairs.
Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to the Devil when the church is converted into a social club for families, an arena for youth activities, athletic or otherwise, or even a women’s kitchen or hobbies room. I do not exactly mean to attack these matters as if it is evil on its own merits, but only saying that if the church forgets its message and diverts away from its intended character as stranger in the world, and from witnessing to its rejected and crucified Master, that would be a Satanic trap.
Let us remember that the demonic resistance in the Book of Nehemiah (in which the walls of Jerusalem were built) was more forceful and more powerful than his resistance in the Book of Ezra (in which the house of God was built). The allegory in this is clear to everyone with a strong spiritual visibility. Even though the enemy does not want us to worship God, but the worship of God does not disturb him so much unless it is associated with separation (which we see in the building of the walls). There, and only there, the testimony against him can start and score success.
Perhaps we remember what we have discussed in Chapter 7: Egypt’s Pharaoh offered Moses, among other things, to sacrifice for The Lord in the land of Egypt. We see that the non-detached church, the worldly church, is a church that is entrapped in the snare of Satan.
NEGATIVITY
The Devil labors to make the church a sullen one, negative and ineffective in its testimony. For him to accomplish this, he tries in two fronts:
First: By entering fear in the hearts of the believers, fear from persecution that they may be subjected to, if they witness to Christ. As he horrifies the faithful, he makes them hide their belief and not proclaim it whenever they can, and effect their life to be a negative one. In this, The Lord said to the Angel of the Church of Smyrna, “Fear nothing [of] what thou art about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give to thee the crown of life.” (Rev 2:10).
Second: He may occupy their minds with worldly matters, and entice them with the articles of modern life, so they would indulge in their personal affairs and love the world. They would then forget the noblest goal for which they are living. This is what we see in the Church of Pergamos. (Rev 2:12-17).
He may even work with the two fronts together, just as he did with the group returning from captivity at the time of Zerubbabel when he ceased, by force, the work in building the house of God (Ezr 4:23), then he occupied the people with thinking about their personal affairs and made them follow the worldly path laboring in their own livelihood while dwelling in their wainscoted houses, while this house lies waste. (Hag 1).
That is why the apostle says in his Epistle to The Phillipians “Only conduct yourselves worthily of the glad tidings of the Christ,” And how would the saints live worthily of the glad tidings of the Christ? The apostle answers, “ye stand firm in one spirit, with one soul, labouring together in the same conflict with the faith of the glad tidings; and not frightened in anything by the opposers,” (Ph 1:27, 28).
That is the successful church that’s bearing a worthiness on earth. It is, “Terrible as troops with banners” (Song 6:4,10). When being part of the troops, the army, the personal affairs are forgotten, and the soldiers dedicate their time, their powers and all of their lives to the noble cause. This way, the church becomes effective and forbearing, with a goal and a message. You will find it conflicting before God in prayer for the souls, exposing itself to the world in only one way: to witness to God before people, has an internal conflict before the Throne of Grace, and exterior labor in witnessing to Christ. A church like this one would be far more potent than a fighting army. Its weapons are not carnal but able through God, to the pulling down of strong holds.
Why is the progress of the Bible today not very clear, with respect to the number of souls won or in steadfastness of the saved? The answer is clear however: Where is our working together with one soul for the faith of the Gospel? Working together does not only mean speaking but also moving and laboring. Where is our practical and effective work for the good of the glad tidings?
When the apostle says, ", labouring together in the same conflict with the faith of the glad tidings; and not frightened in anything” this means that when the internal dissensions disappear from the church, and it becomes one unity in a true laboring with one soul, the opposers from outside, if they surface, would be ineffective. The believers will possess more and more tolerance to pain and suffering.
We conclude our discussion in this chapter with a warning against a tactical maneuver of the Devil. When he wants to undermine the testimony of the church, he will likely direct his darts high into the effectual ones among the group. He would try to blemish their image, either by enticing them to actually fall into sin, and that would be a catastrophe, or by spreading rumors and lies about them. He knows that this would have a devastating effect on the entire testimony.
This is exactly what happens in the worldly, regular, wars. The enemy is interested to capture the leaders during the battle, and take them as prisoners of war. When a high ranking leader falls captive in the hands of the enemy, they consider it more important and more valuable than taking tens or even hundreds of regular soldiers captive.
Someone (79) made a resemblance of this situation to an engineer appointed to lay railroad tracks in a rugged mountainous area. The engineer would concentrate his efforts on digging tunnels amid the mountain, or erecting bridges over the valleys and rivers. The rest of the work dealing with flat and wide-open areas will not occupy his mind a whole lot. If he finishes his work with the critical areas, the work in his estimation would be nearly completed. Similarly, when the Devil wants to destroy the testimony of an effective church and convert it to a negative one, he will consolidate his efforts against the effectual members amongst the assembly.
The word now is directed to those who magnify God and dignify Him: You who aim, with His Grace, to become a blessing to His flock, beware of what is against you. The heat of the battle is directed against you. The enemy, with his tricks and maneuvers is watching you and waiting to topple you and your work. But, thanks to God and glory be to His Name, because “Ye are of God, children, and have overcome them, because greater is he that [is] in you than he that [is] in the world.” (I Jn 4:4), and, “in all these things we more than conquer through him that has loved us.” (Ro 8:37).
Satan and
the Individual Believers
“Your adversary [the] devil as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist, steadfast in faith,” (I Peter 5:8,9)
Mankind is divided into two teams: Followers of Christ and followers of the Devil.
The followers of the Devil are, “the sons of the evil [one]” (Mt 13:38) or, “the children of the devil” (I Jn 3:10 & Ac 13:10); “[the sons] of Belial” (II Sam 23:6 & I Sam 2:12), and those are secured of his offenses (Lk 11:21). But the followers of Christ are subject to the Devil’s animosity and warfare.
The followers of Christ, as we know, can be true followers, but some can be false ones. This brings about an important question: Does the Devil know who are the true believers?
The answer to this question is that we believe that the Devil knows that God Has His own elected people. We also believe that he knows that his trials to storm those elected will be of no avail (although surely he is trying to spoil their testimony, and, furthermore, to wear them down). But there is no indication in the Bible to point to a fact that the Devil knows who they personally are with certainty. He judges matters at their face value, and he judges people according to their fruits, just as we do, even though he is in a position that permits him to judge more accurately for two reasons:
- One reason is his long experience with mankind, about 6,000 years.
- The other reason is that he is a spirit, so that is why he can see people, not only when they appear before others, but also when they are secluded in their own lively affairs, i.e., whenever the person is alone for any reason. This is something, we do not have the ability or opportunity to do.
But he, surely enough, has never seen the Book of Life, to know from it who are the elect people of God. Just as we make wrong judgments at times, he is subject to misjudge too. This is why the plan of the Devil is to fight against all people of God , with no exception , trying to destroy all of them if he can. Naturally, he does not do this in person, but he has regiments to whom he can, “say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to {his} bondman, Do this, and he does it.” (Mt 8:9).
As for the activities of the Devil against the people of God, it can be divided into three categories:
His temptations to them, his accusation against them, and his resisting them.
THE TEMPTATIONS OF THE DEVIL
The first and foremost of the Devil’s activities comes from his being “the tempter”. This is what happened with the Lord as the perfect man. Immediately after His baptism in the Jordan River and the declaration of The Father that This Is My Beloved Son, He was led by the Holy Spirit to go to the wilderness where the Devil came to Him as the, “tempter.” (Mt 4:1, 3). The same thing happened with the believers of Thessalonica, They were still being “children in faith” when the apostle Paul worried about them and expressed this saying, “For this reason I also, no longer able to refrain myself, sent to know your faith, lest perhaps the tempter had tempted you and our labour should be come to nothing” (I Th 3:5)
We have already seen how the serpent came to Eve in the Garden of Eden, and subjected her to temptation and falling. The Devil, then, in addition to his powerful mind, he is also an experienced fighter who has long experience. Who is it, out of all mankind, that escaped his trapping or was ever secure from his temptations?!
The Devil has a bag full of tricks. He chooses from it what is adequate for the person he wants to subject to temptation. He knows very well where our weak points are. Just like an expert in a certain area who examines an apparatus and discovers quickly what is wrong with it, even if the malfunctioning part is not readily surfacing. The Devil, likewise, knows how to look to the believer, and quickly discovers the malfunction and the feeble spots in him. He can diagnose quickly who has lust as his downfall, who has pride or selfishness, who has a hot temper and quick agitation, and who is inflicted with incoherence and indifference. I might be able to hide my weak traits from those who are closest to me, but this formidable enemy, who follows me everywhere, knows exactly where my handicaps are.
But the Devil sometimes tempts the believer in areas where the believer thinks that it is impossible for him to fail it. Is not that what happened with Peter in the day where he was full of self confidence, to the extent that he felt no need to pray. Even though The Lord had warned him previously that the Devil is demanding to “sift them like wheat,” and even though He advised him several times to pray so that he can evade temptation, Peter said to The Lord, “I am ready” (Lk 22:33). Hence, Peter became a soft bite to chew by the Devil, had it not been for the intercession of Christ and His praying for him. “Let him that thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” (I Co 10:12).
The Devil aims, with his temptations of the believers and sifting them, to expose their weaknesses and reveal their shortcomings, so, perhaps he can change the mind of God and alter His plan for them. But God, on the other hand, lets the Devil sift the believers to purify them from impurities and ridding them of weaknesses (Just as He purified Job of self-righteousness and saving Peter from self-confidence.) The Lord also wants them, the faithful, just as he wanted of Job and Peter, to discover how much they in themselves are weak so they lean on Him.
In the Devil’s bag, we can recognize some of his flaming arrows he darts toward the faithful. We shall consider five of those arrows:
- DOUBT: This is a blazing missile used by the Devil very frequently with mankind starting with the Garden of Eden (Gen 3). All the believers experienced this arrow. The Devil, for instance, plants doubt in the hearts of the recent believers to so be skeptical about the truthfulness or the validity of their faith. He also fills the minds of the youth with different doubts and various agnostic thoughts about the existence of God, the meaning of life and the authenticity of the Holy Bible.
The believers who are suffering different kinds of pain, are also a target of the Devil to become dubious about the goodness of God. The Devil used this arrow with John the Baptist while he was in prison (Mt 11:2, 3). That is why the apostle James says in his Epistle, “Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father of lights, with whom is no variation nor shadow of turning.” (Jas 1:16, 17) which means that God is The Source of the good things and nothing else. The apostle Peter also in his First Epistle, nicknamed, The Epistle of sufferings, speaking about worries, and, before he speaks about pain once more says to the believers, “Be vigilant, watch. Your adversary [the] devil as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour.” (I Pe 5:8).
- LUSTS: This is another flaming missile. The first sin was one of desire (Gen 3). How many heroes fell as a result of this sin! Let’s remember for example Samson and David.
In the present world that is corrupted by lust (II Pe 1:4), how varied are the images of deceiving yearnings these days!! Of course we cannot cleanse the entire world, but we can attend to the state of our hearts from which wellsprings of life emanate. Luther (82) said, “I cannot stop the birds from flying around my head, but I can stop them from making in my hair.” There is a fact, well-known to all of us, that if we fall once to temptation, we will find it even more difficult to avoid it the second time. Let us then beware of the smallest of sparks. Desire is a spark that turns into fire and burns all the crops.
Satan, surely enough, tempts the unmarried young people. He also focuses on the younger widows (See I Tim 5:15). Spurgeon (83)said, “People with no work, or unemployed, entice the Devil to offer them temptations.” In fact, most of the work of the Devil is done in people who have nothing to occupy their time and mind.
He may even tempt married couples into dropping their life of purity and spousal honesty and faith. The verses from 2 to 5 in I Corinth, chapter 7 does not warrant any special understanding or analysis. But I suffice in my comment on it by stating an advice given once by one of the servants of God (84): “The married couples who use sex as a weapon against each other, instead of using it as a material for building, they offer the Devil an open invitation to destroy their marriage life.”
We also take this opportunity to seriously warn against being, “diversely yoked” in marriage since it is a dangerous Satanic trap (II Co 6:14), through which the Devil tries to distant each of the spouses from living to glorify God.
- PRIDE: This is a third flaming missile. In his book, “The Devil” John Wesley(85) said, “Pride is a strange illness - it makes everyone sick but the one who has it!”
Before the Devil used pride to befall mankind from the Garden of Eden, he himself had fallen by it. We notice that Peter relates the temptations of Satan, the roaring lion, to the sin of pride. Peter warns the believers against pride after he persuaded them to be clothed with humility (I Pe 5:5-8). Just as Peter did in his First Epistle, so did James too (Jas 4:5-7).
Pride is what Satan used to entrap David in sin so he would count the people . (I Ch 21:1). Through pride and self-aggrandizing he led Peter to the sin of denying the Lord.
Satan may lure a wealthy believer to feel that he is higher than his brethren. This is a dangerous trap (I Tim 6:17 & James 1:10). The same thing may be for a highly educated person (I Tim 6:20), or to a man of high rank or to a powerful person (Jer 9:23, 24) or to a beautiful woman…etc.
There is also a certain kind of pride which is very risky, it is the spiritual pride of some person who is given spiritual gifts or biblical knowledge by God (I Co 8:1 & II Co 12:7). In general, it is rather hazardous for a recent believer to be pushed too early into the first line, or to a service with great exposure. That is why we see that the conditions necessary for a bishop is not to be a novice in faith, for otherwise he may, “being inflated, fall into [the] fault of the devil.” (I Tim 3:6). The apostle clearly predicts the novice’s head may be blown with pride if he becomes a bishop too quickly.
The believer, after a long, effective and successful service is more subject to face this sin. A story was told about one of God’s servants who had just delivered a strong sermon when one of the brethren approached him saying that the sermon was a great wonder. The preacher answered, “My dear brother, the Devil had beaten you in telling me how great the sermon was, even before I left the pulpit!” The jest here is that the experienced servant of God recognized the tricks of the Devil to supply him with material for pride or self-aggrandizing. St. Augustineonce said, “The first sin that knocked man off is the last sin man is to conquer.”
- ANGER: Anger gives Satan an excellent opportunity and open doors wide for him. When a person flares with temper he can no longer be objective in what he says or does, but rather behaves in the heat of passions without thinking and without appraising the consequences. It becomes a lot worse if the sun is set while we are still angry, because more often than not, the Devil will share our pillow, and will start to review the incidents as a recorded tape, and coax us to hate the opposing person with bitterness, even with a desire for revenge. That is why the apostle Paul said, “Be angry, and do not sin; let not the sun set upon your wrath, neither give room for the devil.” (Eph 4:26, 27).
Think about what happened when Jephthah was stricken with evil anger, and how he killed 42 thousand persons from the people of God! How true it is that anger gives an excellent opportunity to the Devil!
- DESPAIR AND DEPRESSION: This weapon is one of the Devil’s best in his arsenal when he fights against the believers. Using this pitfall, he was able to elbow his way into many believers when he could not approach them any other way. He used this dart with Elijah, the brave, so he was filled with a spirit of despair and failure, and went to seek death for himself. (I Ki 19)… But, thanks be to God, because many others, of the servants of God, were able to overcome this flaming missile of the Devil, e.g. Nehemiah in the Old Testament (Ne 4:1-4; 6:10-14), and the apostle Paul in the New Testament (II Tim 4:16-18).
THE DEVIL’S ACCUSATIONS
This is the second activity of the Devil with us, and in it, we find a fulfilling to his name, because the word Devil means “The complainer” or “The accuser.” The Devil, after he tempts us to fall into sin, he hurries to “inform” about us or to “accuse” against us. This is, “reproach and [the] snare of the devil” (I Tim 3:7). Because the Devil was not a Seraph (i.e. an angel of mercy who carries healing to the sinner as in Isaiah 6:6), nor he was an evangelizing angel that carries good news, as Gabriel (Lk 1:19, 26), nor was he an angel of emancipation, or rescue and help, such as Michael (Dan 10:13; 12:1), but he was a cherub whose knowledge is limited to the righteousness of God. So, he knows very well how to complain. He registers, just like a spy, all behaviors of the believers and their movements (using his followers as we have seen), then he goes and complains of them.
His complaining against us has three directions: To God, to the conscience of the believer himself, and finally to our brethren.
- His Accusation To God Against Us: In the last record of the Devil’s being the complainer, we understand that he does not stop accusing before God day and night. (Rev 12:10). The explanation of this trait is evident in Zechariah 3:1, 2 when we see Joshua standing before God in dirty attire, and the Devil, considering him as defending righteousness, standing at his right to resist him .
It goes without saying that the Devil cannot lie to God. So, when he accuses to God, he must be accusing of something real. If indeed the accusation is real, then what can the believer do? He cannot do anything whatsoever since the accusation is real and proven. On the other hand, the believer does not have to do anything, since Christ, who paid our debt on the Cross, is Himself the One who faces the complainer, just as what happened with Joshua the high priest (Zec 3:1, 2) and just like what happens with us as well (Ro 8:33 and I Jn 2:2).
As far as Job the righteous is concerned, the Devil could not accuse him of any wrongdoing in his entire life. When he could not deny Job’s righteousness, he threw darts at the instigating motives for that righteousness. This is as if he said to God, “Does Job has Your fear in his heart for nothing?, If You change the way You treat him, then he will indignify and affront You.” This should not surprise us coming from that selfish being, since the pot overflows with its own filling, and’ “when he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own;” (Jn 8:44)
We ought to remember that the Devil does not know our thoughts or our inner feelings. Only God knows what is inside the hearts (Ps 139:1-6; I Ki 8:39 & Dan 2:28). David prayed to God once to ask for help in keeping his speech short, so the evil one before him would not catch his mistakes and complain to God about it, “I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked is before me.” (Ps 39:1).
- His Accusing Of The Believer To His Own Conscience: The Devil does not only direct his accusations, against us, to God, but he also targets our own sense of right and wrong, so to fill our hearts with gloom and despair. A bird whose wing is broken cannot fly very high.
One of God’s servants said that this condition of bewilderment, after the fall of the believer, places a blockade between the soul and Christ. The soul enters into a condition of deep darkness and despondent confusion. This is the ultimate adversity. The real harm is not when the enemy leads you to temptation, not even when you fall into temptation, but it is when the accuser uses your feeling of guilt, or your fear of its consequences, to implant the seeds of doubt towards the love of God and His sufficiency to restore you, and His plentiful adequacy for your peace and security.
That is why it was said, about the believers, in Revelations 12:11 “they have overcome him {the accuser, or the Devil} by reason of the blood of the Lamb, and by reason of the word of their testimony.” It is as if the blood of the Lamb is the legal refute in the face of accusations, and the Word of God is the declared proof. This clearly means that the blood of Christ is the essential foundation upon which the legal defense is built against the accusations of the Devil before God. Also, that the Word was dispatched to them, the believers, so they became aware of their strong legal defense, so it gave them clear consciences.
The apostle John, the seer, adds, “and have not loved their life even unto death” (Rev 12:11). This is the third factor in subduing the Devil. The Devil knows the human character well. He said to the Lord, “Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life” (Job 2:4). But, what can the Devil do with people who do not love their life even unto death?!
With this triple-edged and effective sword the saints can overpower that enemy, with the blood of The Lamb, with the Word of their testimony, and with their willingness for martyrdom.
- Accusing Us Before Our Brethren: The Devil reverts to this trick to separate, and thus divide, between the people of God, as we mentioned in the last chapter.
This faces us with the question: What do we do when a brother or a sister errs? Do we haste into washing his feet and wiping them with a towel, as Christ did with His disciples? (John 13), or do we repeat his error before the others as the accusing Devil does with our brethren? What side do we take??
RESISTANCE OF THE DEVIL
This is the third activity the Devil practices against us. In doing so, he has several approaches:
- OPPOSITION : The Devil hinders the servant of God as much as he can, just as he did with the apostle Paul. He hindered the apostle once and twice from completing a visit to the believers of Thessalonica (I Th 2:18). This halting could be accomplished with a sudden sickness of the servant or one of his family members. It could also be accomplished with a breakdown in the method of transportation: the car, the train, etc., or even by imposing stumbling blocks in the way of obtaining an entry visa, or the like, into the country he intends to visit. Furthermore, it could be accomplished through drastic weather changes such as wind storms (Mk 4:37), monsoon rains, washout floods, mud slides, .. etc.
He may even use other people, even some of the believers at times, to impede the servant from completion of God’s works (Mt 16:22, 23 & Ac 21:20-24).
The Devil may delay the arrival of valuable spiritual magazines to the believers by losing it or rerouting it in the mail. He may affect undue noises on the spiritual broadcasts or televised word, so the word of life would not reach the needy souls.
One peculiar incident is recorded in the Bible where the Devil showed ability to hinder God’s response to our prayers from reaching us promptly. The incident is recorded in the book of Daniel 10:12, 13 when one of the demonic hosts delayed the arrival of the angel, sent by God to Daniel, by 21 days. Daniel, on the other hand, used the opportunity wisely and beneficially since he spent it in prayer and fasting until the response arrived according to the good timing of our wise God.
- POSITIVE RESISTANCE: The Devil may apply this approach in several different ways. He may resist the work by imitating it! Just as he used Jannes and Jambres to withstand Moses, by imitating the wonders he made to weaken its effect on Pharaoh (II Tim 3:8 & Ex 7:11-13), and also as the Elymas the magician (for so his name is by interpretation) opposed Paul and Barnabas, seeking to turn away the proconsul Sergius Paulus from the faith (Ac 13:8). The Devil did similar things with the lying prophets who alleged that they are carrying the word of God while they were appointed with the message of Satan (I Kings 22 and Jeremiah 27,…)
The style of resistance may be distracting the attention away from whatever the servant of God is delivering, or opposing him, or using the clerical authority to prevent people from listening to the word of truth, or even using force to quiet the speakers (See Ac 7:54-58; 16:16-23; 19:28 & I Th 2:16 & II Tim 4:14, 15). Etc.…
Of old, the Devil excited the people, returning from Babel, in the days of Zerubbabel, Ezra and Nehemiah, to impede the building of the temple and the fence of Jerusalem, by acting and by arguing, by force and by sarcasm (Ezr 4 and Ne 4).
- DOWNRIGHT HARM: “Behold, the devil is about to cast of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days” (Rev 2:10). Just as God imposed limits on the Devil regarding what he can afflict on Job (Job 1:12; 2:6), here too, He limited the Devil to a period of time he cannot overstay (ten days). The Devil obviously wanted to erase the testimony of God, but The Lord employed the persecution afflicted on the believers of Smyrna to purify that testimony and purify the witnesses themselves. So, He let the Devil loose, and allowed the fire to burn the dross, but He will never allow the fire to burn beyond its limits and scald the gold (Pr 25:4)
Paul received a thrashing slap from the Devil, i.e. “a thorn for the flesh” (II Cor 12:7). But this too was a blessing to Paul, just as the tribulations of Job were delivered for his own good.
* * *
We conclude our discussion about the dealings of the Devil with the individual believer, with two words, of warning and sympathy:
THE FIRST WORD: If it is impossible for the Devil to break the believer’s neck, he can break his ribs. If he is incapable of destroying the believer, he can make him stop in his track ineffective. Our memory can still serve us in recalling many of the names of those who occupied prominent positions in the church of God, who started the work diligently, and all of a sudden, facing the insistence and persuasion of temptation, they fell, and their fall was tremendous. Their names are never mentioned without a sigh of sorrow. How do things happen, from time to time, that we would, “Tell [it] not in Gath, carry not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, “(87)! (II Sam 1:19-27).
THE SECOND WORD: The followers of Christ are not toys in the hands of that dangerous enemy, but they are surrounded with divine pleasure as the psalmist said, “For thou, Jehovah, wilt bless the righteous [man]; with favour wilt thou surround him as [with] a shield.” (Ps 5:12). It is rather impossible for the Devil to penetrate that formidable barrier until the Lord allows him to do so (Job 1:10).
The Devil is indeed a significant force. But he is not omnipotent. Only God is Omnipotent. God is ours, and He is on our side. Therefore we can say with Elisha, “Fear not, for they that are with us are more than they that are with them. ” (II Ki 6:16).
But, why does God allow the Devil, from time to time, to accuse us or resist us or even inflict harm on us, it is because God wants us to surrender to Him, lean on Him and trust in His support. Then God would know how to extract blessings for us out of all circumstances, makes the fury of man, or even the fury of the Devil praise Him, “For the fury of man shall praise thee; the remainder of fury wilt thou gird on thyself.” (Ps 76:10).
How glorious is the “end of the Lord”, “Behold, we call them blessed who have endured. Ye have heard of the endurance of Job, and seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is full of tender compassion and pitiful.” (Jas 5:11). This is what we know now. It is also what will be discovered in the future by the martyrs of the great tribulation after they pass through the fire of trials, when they say, “Great and wonderful [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; righteous and true [are] thy ways, O King of nations. Who shall not fear [thee], O Lord, and glorify thy name? for [thou] only [art] holy; for all nations shall come and do homage before thee; for thy righteousness have been made manifest.” (Rev. 15:3, 4).
Let us remember that the Devil, from one hand, works diligently to divide the body of Christ into numerous parts, and encourages, on the other hand, unity and mixing between religious systems based not on holiness and separation from evil (Compare Jn 17:11), the trend that will end ultimately, at the time of Rapture and after the Rapture, with the Spiritual Babel that will be judged by God.
This points out to the need of the assemblies of God to have “gate keepers.” See I Chronicles 23:4, 5 where there is a similar number of doorkeepers to that of chanters. This means that there will be joy inside, to the degree of the pious caring of the coming from outside.
When I say “People of God” I mean all of those who are confessors of faith, in the way people see them and in the way the Devil sees them too, but not in the way God knows them (II Tim 2:19).
No doubt that the Devil concentrates his activities against those dedicated people, and consolidate his offenses against those who are influential among the people of God. Someone (80) said, “Saints who have the fullest and most transporting revelation of God, often have the saddest experience of Satan.”
Whether it was with Job or Peter (Job 1,2 & Lk 22:31), the Devil had to go to God first for permission before the temptation.
I would like to add, with some preservation, that the person moves to the circle of the Kingdom of Heavens once he is baptized. It is the circle of the official salvation here on earth (See the Book: Baptism by Youssef Riad). This way he becomes an official subject for Christ. Consequently he falls, under the umbrella of His protection. The apostles had exceptional authority to be able to remove such protection by dropping this new citizenship, and returning the person to the world mastered by the Devil (81). This meant that they could hand the erring one back to Satan (I Co 5:5 & I Tim 1:20). To hand a person back to Satan means that the Devil can do whatever he pleases with that person, even to the destruction of the flesh. If this person was a true child of God, his will shall be subdued and he will repent. That is what happened with the sinner at Corinth (I Co 5 and II Co 2,7). If the person was only a nominal Christian, he would indulge in sin even more, such as what happened with Alexander (I Tim 1:20 & II Tim 4:14)..
Naturally, this authority of the apostles does not exist today (the authority of handing someone to Satan). It has ended with the end of the apostolic age.
From this incident we conclude that the Devil has the ability to inspire thoughts that may not seem exactly demonic until it is too late. This dangerous matter gives a new dimension to the words of Jesus Christ, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Mt 26:41).
Notice that the sin of adultery, which was committed by David resulted in the death of five people, but this sin, the sin of pride, led to the falling of 70 thousand people!!!
From the rest of the Bible we know that the Devil complains against mankind in general. He stood before Joshua the high priest (who resembles the earthly people) to resist him, i.e. to complain against him because of his dirty clothing (i.e. his bad attitude) Zec 3:1-3. We find him as well standing at the right of a sinner to accuse against him (Ps 109:6). In this psalm (109) we can find resemblance to Judas Iscariot himself (Ps 109:1-8 & Ac 1:20). Even though the Devil accuse against man in general, but whoever finds his protection in the Blood of The Lamb shall be victorious (Rev 12:10, 11 & Ex 12: 13, 23).
Notice that Elisha did not pay attention to his weakness against the power of the army coming to arrest him (II Ki 6), but spoke herein about who are with us and who are with them. These are the invisible kingdoms, the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of the Devil. The same applies to us: Even though we do not know how many are with us and how many are with them,, but it suffices to know that those who are with us are more “If God [be] for us, who against us?” (Ro 8:31).
